I just worked on a very nice house and the customers had 1984 matching Maytag units.
Looked showroom new. I asked if they get them detailed or something. I have seen 2014 units in worse shape.
I told him if he ever wanted a replacement set I would give him $100 each for the units.

You were at my house? I have a set from that era and they look almost brand new. That zinc finish in the washer basket still looks showroom new.

I changed the ignitor on the dryer. the original element was still on it. Had a mfg date in 1984. That blew my mind.

Nap should I steer clear of the GE set I posted from Home Depot earlier?

Lowes has a pretty good sale going on. Just got a washer dryer and ice box for $1400 out the door.

No the cheap GE's are legit as long as the knob clicks as you turn it.

One thing I like is for them to have a stainless steel tub.
I like the Frigidaire dishwashers and love the Whirlpool units (Maytag, Whirlpool, Kitchenaid) LG makes a really good dishwasher as well. If your budget allows, Bosch dishwashers are the best (unless your budget allows for Miele or Asko)
The Whirlpool units have self cleaning filters and a large fod disposal blade now too, so that's a plus.

I have had a Kenmore elite oasis HE top load washer for the past 5 years. It used to clean clothes ok but has turned into garbage the last few months. I have to wash loads twice and that's spraying them with shout before washing and using Tide pods.
Not sure if I should go with the basic GE washer or just purchase a Speed Queen.

We have Fisher Paykel, double-drawer. Extremely quiet.
Very pleased thus far.

I agree people look at fancy machines over basic speed queen.
I had 4 stores that sold hardware which included appliances, lumber, garden center, Ope which means we had to provide service & free delivery to beat big boxes.
My best salesman always sold esp by saving how long does your computer last.
He did well plus it would cover people to around 3 to 5 yrs w hen the board would go out.
Service we do well on changing computer board and it doesn't take long.
Old days 1970's - 1985 when dad had a service center maytag was a tank it was transmissions, rollers & belts on dryers, and thermostats. Those guys worked their butts off. Heck I lifted those bad boys back in the day I hated moving maytag they were built like tanks. Whirlpool/kenmore was lighter but not as well built.
I got a Sears kenmore / whirlpool from 1992 that I still use today no issues.
That was one of the first lines we carried offered by our distribution when we started out selling appliances.

I am about to pull the trigger on speed queen. If napoleon comes back I need a model recommendation.

I ended up returning my Speed Queen washer and dryer. Washer was front loaded (only choice we have considering our laundry room layout). Leaked from day one.
To make matters worse, the way the door was hinged, the washer would swing wide open into the dryer hole, eliminating our ability to quickly swap clothes from the washer to the dryer.
Ended up going with Maytag Maxima Steam. Been great so far. I realize they probably won't last as long as Speed Queen brand, but this set is much quieter, offers more useless options (to me, I don't wash clothes), looks better (according to my wife - we have the graphite gray color) and more user friendly for our application.

I think they only make one modEl in front load and top load. I have a top load and couldn't be happier. I also have an electric dryer a d it works really too.
