I have both. I almost always check Netflix first. Amazon's content is pretty good as well. I think it's, at worst, a competitor. If you only want one, Amazon had added benefits that Netflix doesn't compete with (free 2-day shipping on a ton of items vs...a few better tv shows).

If anyone knows how to improve my amazon stream, please let me know.

Get one of the HD Rokus and eliminate Apple as the middleman. The problem is not with the stream from Amazon.

Does either offer blu ray quality picture? Or close to it? Excuse my ignorance on the subject.

Not 100% true. Not all shows have HD options and some of the video is terrible. I'm not using Apple and some of the Amazon video is horrible.

Now when I say some, I've only seen a few terrible episodes. Most are good enough although I get HD on Netflix for just about everything I've watched.

I find Netflix to have a little better selection. I had Prime before they started offering the instant video service so I look at it as a bonus. Although lately I've noticed the video quality to be higher on Amazon. I run both on a PS3 fwiw

First, try Google.

Second, bitrate of average DVD is 5-7 mbps. Average Blu-Ray is 20 or so. Average over-the-air HD is 6-15.

Average streaming HD is around 4-6.

Amazon is 720p, not 1080.

Audio from streaming is muddy, highly compressed and a lot of the time is just stereo or worse, mono. With Blu Ray, you can get unbelievably great audio.
