1800 isn't going to get a 1br in a good area of Manhattan. She should seriously consider roommates, although that is definitely a little tough if she doesn't know anyone. I got lucky and lived with the same people 4 years in a row, but I know girls can be tougher

North of 100th street is only the upper east side in broker's minds, FYI...

Have been living in the NYC area for a number of years. You can find a place for $1,800, but that will be on the low end. Check out Jersey City, NJ and Hoboken, NJ. They are both very close to the city and just a train ride (on the PATH) away from Manhattan. Sell as much as you can and buy new or off Craigslist when you arrive. It's a giant pain to move and there is no room to park a moving truck. The more you can buy in NYC and have delivered the easier. Absolutely sell the car. In most cases, it is more expensive and more of a pain to keep. It's extremely easy to get around with the train/bus and if you can't you just take an Uber.

Lived in NYC my first 3 years after undergrad. Just shipped like 6 big boxes and took 4 bags with me (before all the fees for checked bags)

I took the only route I could b/c my family wasn't willing to pay broker fees and I had no cash; craigslist. I lived with probably 10 people over my 3 years and I will never have a roommate again. $1800 you should be able to find a place with roommates in the East Village or such. You will not find many spots for a studio/1BR for that price.

4.) I would definitely like to sell her car, cancel her insurance, etc. Are there any others that would suggest otherwise?

Cars are not needed, a friend of mine was paying $1,000 a mth to park her car in covered parking,

Not dangerous but I wouldnt want to live there as a young single person out of college

Not to pick on you here, but I have found LIC to be great. There's tons of young professionals around and you can't beat the view, plus subway access to like 7+ lines in the vicinity. There's a reason why there's a whole lot of high rise construction going up in that area of Queens at the moment.

So, just my take after reading through this thread. You, who has never lived in Manhattan keeps stating that you can easily find apartments for $1,800, yet all those that have lived or are living in NYC say that it's very hard to find that cheap of living without roommates in an area you actually want to live and is serviceable.

Now, I don't know who is right, but I'm just offering my 2 cents on what I've gathered after reading through.

Carry on....

I mean he posted links to apartments that can be found for around that price

There is someone in this thread who says he is renting for around that price too.

Let me change my statement. Someone new to the City I do not think is going to enjoy Queens. You an me have extensive time in the city. It is different. As a young new resident, I think Manhattan is the place to be. Just my opinion

I have been to New York almost 180 days the last few years each year. I have researched heavily what it cost to live there as my company has wanted to move me. I know what the city cost. I have posted links showing apartments for under $1800 in Manhattan.

Well ok .

Just thought it was worthy of note to point out, but hey, if you think you're right, that's all that matters. I'm sure your opinion carries more weight since you did the Googles and stop in for business throughout the year.

Are you missing the people who also Live in New York saying you can find those apartments? The only people who have said I am wrong are people that actually dont or havent been there. It is a bunch of southerners that hear about the big bad expensive city
