personally do not like seasons. I like to be warm. Living in Nashville is OK, but it is still too cold for me in general. I would have to go with L.A.
This. It was unseasonably cold in the Memphis area this past winter. I lost count of how many days I drove to work and the temperature reading was in the low single digits. There's a special kind of cold below about 5 degrees in any kind of wind that hurts the nose, ears, and everything exposed. It's tolerable the first few days, but it gets absolutely miserable after that.
I'm not going to get into details on how much it costs to heat a home in that kind of weather, but you probably understand if you live along or north of I-40.
I don't like cold winters. I may have to move to either Pittsburgh or Portland next year....the choice between the two will be easy as hell. I'll take 5 months of rain and 40 degrees over bitterly cold any day.
Los Angeles over New York for the same reason. Easy choice. I'd happily fly to New York in the spring or fall and enjoy it as a tourist.
I could tolerate DC and maybe even Philly, but not New York or Boston. Definitely not Chicago or Pittsburgh.

Technically it is though.

first of all, 175 is more than enough to live in a nice place in a nice part of town, so long as you don't have kids.
also
in NY, take metro north, and you'll be in beautiful mountains of hudson valley in 45 minutes. also a 3 hour train ride to DC, and less than that to Philly and Boston. Not too far from Niagara Falls and Canada, as well.
and the jersey shore/long island for beautiful beaches.

LA over nyc. I've been to both. Chicago is the correct answer tho.

I'd rather be broke in CA than broke in in NY

Two cents from someone that has been to most major U.S. cities 50-100 times...
U.S. only has 3 true urban cities...NYC, Chicago, and SF. So, if an urban environment is what you want, NYC is it over LA though SF is awesome (Chicago weather sucks most of the year).
If quality of life is more important, LA weather can't be beat and it does have a quality of life impact.
Other tidbits...Boston sucks nearly as bad as Chicago. Portland cool but wouldn't want to live there. Seattle and Minneapolis are bigger than most realize. Rust Belt cities like Pittsburgh and Cleveland are up and coming.
Also, anyone that says Manhattan is the center of the universe needs to visit London and report back.

Yeah but I HATE cold weather.
I want to go hiking in the middle of January, not deal with snow

175k isn't enough for me to live in either

Portland flat out sucks. Shitty weather, zero sunshine, ugly women, horrible food, and hippies everywhere. Skiing at mt hood was the only thing I enjoyed about Portland. Otherwise, it was a complete disappointment.

I'm sure I could top that, but I don't like to brag.

Never been to LA. I think I'd be okay in a basement flat in Manhattan. So NY for me.

175k is more than enough to live in either city as a single person. Cost of living is more in NYC but keep in mind you don't need a car(no monthly payment, insurance or gas) as public transportation is awesome.
More hustle and excitement in NYC, LA has better weather and easier access to outdoor activities. It's personal preference.

How much would you need to make in order to live in either city?

lots of variables, throw a wife, kids, and mortgage into that mix and that changes things
