I don't think it's fat-acceptance to say that the guy on the right looks healthy.

nobody said it was. Just realize he is in the 3-5% of the population that BMI doesnt apply to.

WHAT part of less that 5% of the population lifts weights serious enough to make enough of a change to make BMI irrlevant do yall not understand?

Are you guys telling me people evolved to be “big boned” or have tree trunk legs in 30 years? Or maybe our diets have drastically changed in those 30 years so the BMI should change like that one guy suggested?

I don't think any of those things. I'm just trying to make the point that you can fall in the overweight category, maybe even the obese category and still look relatively healthy, and that the visual perception of weight doesn't always align with the notion of obesity. The BMI was developed in the 1830's. How many people were engaged in weight training back then compared to now?

I also hate you a little bit for making me sound like a fatty apologist!

BMI is also more for measuring health than appearance. Someone who holds 210 on a 6'3 frame well isn't necessarily healthier than the skeletor looking guy at 6'3 145. Again, this is talking about the average joe, not the body builder.

You keep posting ufc weigh ins and fight pics as examples.

These guys know how to lose 15+lbs in a day or two of mainly water and its just to make weight. And it's not even healthy. Even ufc is doing things now to attempt to stop fighters from dropping so much weight. That's just not good examples. Normal guys that actually have that height and weigh that little are gonna be skinny twigs.

It goes both ways. At this point I don't even know what you are arguing for or about.

People need to stop using the very low end to justify being fat.

i mean miguel torres is 5'9" 145 lbs who fights at 135 or did. He isnt POW looking, just thin and ripped

He doesn't look like a pow, but he is not ripped either.

I think the scales are a little tweaked to the low end. At 6'3", 210, I am slightly overweight. At 148, I would look and feel severely underweight. You can't be that tall at 148 and be ripped

Im pointing out that the notion that someone who is under 6' will look like a skinny skeleton that just walked out of a POW camp if he weights what BMI tells him, is well....fricking false. its stupid and that is what we talk about when we talk fat acceptance.

AJ Fletcher weighed in at 170.6 last Thursday; the day before his last fight.

He fought at 187 on Friday night.

Right, UFC fighters are not the norm. But anyone posting "I can't weigh xyz pounds, I look like a skeleton" is in the same boat as the fat acceptance crowd whether they want to believe it or not. I'll pull some pics from a lifting progress reddit to prove it.

wtf are you even talking about?

bottomline is for the average guy that isnt a avid, very avid, weight lifter....BMI is accurate 99% of the time.

anyone that says any different is fricking stupid and can not think logically and is only pulling outliers up to prove a point.

Show me a dad bod that proves your point and Ill listen.

That’s the problem. Yes someone slightly overweight can look healthy (clothes cover up a lot). But my thing isn’t someone that is slightly overweight. Most people do not fall into that category. A lot of people are solidly into the overweight or obese.

Some average weight person from the 90s would be considered skinny today. A fat person from the 90s would be perceived as average today. That’s what the most common form of fat acceptance is. You thinking some that is obese (not talking the rare exception like an NFL player) can look fine is such an instance.

So your excuse is weight training being a reason? The VAST majority of people today too don’t do enough weight training to make a noticeable difference in their BMI. Though people 1830s were probably more physically active because of manual labor or having to walk more.

You missed my main point. Even if you think BMI is dumb, that doesn’t explain why certain places and time periods don’t have nearly as many fat people as most of the US today. This country, in 2020, is filled with more fat people then most places and even more so compared to just 3 decades ago. There’s no denying that.

To be fair, you're doing the same thing that people posting pics above the range are doing. I think it's well established that athletic freaks or hardcore gym rats can look great at either end of the spectrum.

A non-athletic/inactive guy at 6'3 145 would certainly look more like a malnourished POW than a trained UFC fighter.

That calculator says I should weigh under 200lbs. I haven't weighed under 200lbs since 6th grade. I was 250lbs in the best shape of my life. frick that calculator.
