Well if this trend keeps up I'll be able to fill up my truck for under less than half your child support

I'm not mailing your wife the check this month. Sorry.
But I did meet her for 'lunch' the other day. She had a cream base broth type soup and a tossed salad.

You would be too if you were scared of getting laid off
Posted on 9/24/15 at 1:16 pm to SabiDojo
I got laid off from my first IT job with Sperry/Unisys in 1986.
Sucked bad...
I don't wish it on anyone.

This looks like the new normal for a while. Fracking gets cheaper and cheaper. I read something a while back about a new method that uses a lot less water, making it suitable for the Middle East, so all those Saudi fields will get a new lease on life. Not to mention solar, wind, and other technologies that are actually close to being competitive on price. By the time the oil starts running out again, we may not need as much of it.

I'm not in O&G but my business is directly related in the Housing market in Lafayette & surrounding areas. Things haven't slowed down for us yet distribution wise but it is expected. Probably won't be a strong 4th quarter

Probably be like this til sometime in 2017

It's the ebb and flow of that particular industry. When times are good they pay probably a 50% premium to these employees for the jobs they actually do. They should be saving the premium for hard times instead of purchasing jacked up trucks and $600 ice chests.

Nope. No humor in people losing their jobs and livelihood.

So you stated a fact, about the future? Interesting
Posted on 9/24/15 at 1:18 pm to lilsnappa
If these guys didnt get paid crazy amounts of money for very little skills, the O&G people could still keep their jobs, gas could be low and everyone could be happy.

I work IT in the oil/gas pipeline construction industry.
I'm starting in this industry on Monday....DBA/Dev.
Honestly to an outsider looking in this feels like a very bloated industry righting itself. I could be wrong, but that's what it feels like....healthcare went through the same thing 4-5 years ago.

The independents are what drives the industry in America.

Plus I have friends graduating this year in Mechanical engineering. Dont know what they're gonna do
You can do lots of things with mechanical that are not petroleum: oil and gas related, correct?
From the little that I know, and it may be incorrect, it's the ones that got their degrees in petroleum engineering that should be panicking as I don't think the degree transfers into other areas of engineering.

It't not just oil field in Acadiana... All these guys losing their jobs means people aren't going out to eat or spending money on luxuries. A lot of small restaurant and family businesses are closing too.
Cheap gas in Acadiana gives my family more expendable income to go to restaraunts.
I've heard that all jobs existing platforms would be ok, but all new drilling would likely be laid off.
I love the low (and getting lower) price of gas.

Why would these companies go through the hassle of terminating so many employees to just turn around and hire them back again?
Posted on 9/24/15 at 1:21 pm to ForeverLSU02
People tend to act like this is either objectively good or bad.
It sucks that people lose jobs and the aftershocks impact other fields. Of course, these changes also positively impact other people in other regions or of different walks of life.

Although comical, that would be impossible because I'm not married to your sister...why don't you just give the check to your mother and she can handle this sibling/lover dispute.
