how's the job market in Naples? I haven't looked too hard at Florida, but living near the shore would be pretty sweet.

That is the biggest problem. There are so few big companies. It is such a service/tourist based area. This place is where the wealthy come to die. I got lucky.

You’d need a great job to live on the shore

Hey Fin! You could get a decent job and live on the river, leading to the gulf, but to live ON the gulf, good luck. You had better be a consultant, making really great money.

But, the quality of living, the overall lack of crime, trash, etc. Besides the cost of a home (and rent wasn't much more than BR, just the house prices when buying) things aren't expensive here. Home insurance is ridic cheap, as well as auto. Electricity is way cheaper for me. So, living expenses are comparable, besides homes.

I just wonder if people that are doubling their income are recent college grads? My job pays (relative to COL) about what it does elsewhere around the country. More than some places slightly less than others. My previous job did too so it isn't particularly a one off.

I graduated from LSU in 2004, and moved here 10 years later, so not a recent college graduate. LA was shite pay.

I graduated in 2000 and 2003 (have multiple degrees). I have had job offers in Raleigh and Dallas over the past 10 years and they were 10-15% pay raises with 20+% COL increases. Maybe it's industry specific?

Also having a company that came from the NE, right as they moved, helps. Pay is pretty different up there.

That trend will continue. 1800 companies left California last year. Publicly traded ones have a responsibility to their shareholders to maximize profits.

This has been happening for a long time. LA doesn't offer much.

The OT is such drama queens. I grew up in South Louisiana and don't work in a plant or in a field remotely related to industry. I have one kid and we make an income that is well into the upper middle class tier outside of SF or NYC

The difference really is the quantity of opportunities. I graduated undergrad in 03, got an MS in Finance in 06. There were a handful of jobs at a few local banks and maybe a couple entry level financial analyst jobs. That’s it. There’s way more in larger metro areas like Houston, DFW and ATL and that’s important for a new grad with little to no experience.

Mid-career and more experienced people can probably find comparable work around NOLA and even BR, but why come back once you’ve lived somewhere else for 5-10 years and put down roots?

I said “near” not “on”
Living 10-15 minutes from nice beaches would be a big improvement over 3 hours from shite brown Biloxi water or Grand Isle

To everyone saying their salaries doubled just by moving, wtf kind of work do you do? I know for a fact I could not make double or even 30, 50%, etc more simply by moving to Houston, Florida, etc.

I could move and make more but not enough to make up for the cost of living difference.

True.

My objective was to monetize my degree. That’s not everyone but I suspect it’s most people, especially those of us who left school in debt.

The diehards in Louisiana keep saying stuff like this. But this just isn't necessarily the case. There are plenty of other states that don't have a crazy COL but offer a better quality of life and higher pay.

You might even save money...if you consider how much cheaper things like auto insurance, home owner's insurance, taxes, etc are outside of LA.

I want to not live with my parents, play music with my coonass friends, tailgate for LSU games, and occasionally travel on my time off.
