Me too. I work in IT which LA isn't exactly a hotbed for. I've yet to have an offer that improves my life from a COL standpoint. Sure, I could move to Houston and drive 40 miles to work to avoid paying for private school.
Obviously the number of opportunities isn't the same but I've worked in this field for 20 years here. I have tons of invaluable contacts and my kid gets to grow up around her grandparents.
Otherwise the OT is correct and we are all miserable losers

I’m not a die hard, I moved away and realized my quality of life is better close to my friends and family. I’m probably the exception and not the rule and I’m willing to admit that but I have no reason to leave again
ETA: my auto insurance is $170 a month for my wife and I so not sure I’d save on that. I don’t even know what I pay in home insurance.

I’m here for the time being and I’ll always love where I was born and raised but if I won the power ball I’d be out of here on the first thing smoking. One day I’d like to look out the window and now see a pine or oak tree in any damn direction.

Please stop sounding sensible. Louisiana is a third world South American country.

I just moved out of new iberia to relocate to youngsville and work in lafayette. Great people and culture in this area. Horrible cultcha in new iberia. It has turned into a crime ridden dump.
I’ll stay here as long as i’m making good money and feel safe.

Nothing sucks worse than a commute like that. I tried it and was miserable.
Take a normal 8 hour work day with an hour lunch and add an hour and a half commute each way and you are gone for 12 hours a day. Not sure how people with kids live that way.

My wife and I lived 45 min to an hour from work when our kid was born. We weighed staying in the burbs vs having 3 hrs a day back between us and paying for private school. It was an easy decision. Best 12k I spend annually.

To everyone saying their salaries doubled just by moving, wtf kind of work do you do? I know for a fact I could not make double or even 30, 50%, etc more simply by moving to Houston, Florida, etc.
I am a tax accountant, industry. Worked for a publicly traded BR based company and maybe got 3 raises in 7 years. Got great experience, left, had a couple of other jobs then got the offer here. FL has been a great experience. I grew up in the ghetto of Baton Rouge, so this is like night and day.

I really don't like Houston or DFW which just feel completely soulless and dull by comparison.
Care to elaborate on how these two metros are soulless and dull? They are two of the largest metros in the U.S and if you can’t find ANYTHING in an entire spread out metro of over 4 million, then the problem isn’t these places it’s you.
Same goes for the Atlanta metro. I don’t understand why you people try to say these mega regions are boring or dull. Nobody makes you people eat at Cheddars, TGI Friday’s and Applebee’s before heading to your strip mall shopping centers. There’s plenty of original/local things to do and see within each metro.

Guess again.
I had a commute like that and still had to live with my parents. Only, it wasn't 45 minutes, more like 90.

engineers, nurses, doctors, software and IT monkeys, accountants, etc
KingBob, I work in IT and I'd move to South Dakota for double my salary tomorrow. It ain't happening outside of NYC or SF where my COL would be 3x

The diehards in Louisiana keep saying stuff like this. But this just isn't necessarily the case. There are plenty of other states that don't have a crazy COL but offer a better quality of life and higher pay.
You might even save money...if you consider how much cheaper things like auto insurance, home owner's insurance, taxes, etc are outside of LA.
I’ll take your word that cost of living might be a little lower elsewhere but right now I make just as much money as I would in another state, my kids go to really good public schools, my auto insurance is only 205 a month for 3 vehicles, flood insurance is only 450 a year, and home insurance is 900’ish a year with a flat 500 dollar deductible. Oh and we never have to pay for babysitters bc both sides of our family all live within an hour of us. Sure I might be able to get a little more house for the same price but I have no need to keep up with the Jones’.
Now would I move to another part of the state? I would in a heartbeat if I found the right place on the Northshore again. But thatll be when the kids are a bit older.

I left 24 years ago and haven't looked back but I still visit often. With a family, kid's education, and a job, I know I made the right decision.

I guess I hit the jackpot. I do very well, have family, everything I love around me, and live in a great neighborhood. I hate that so many have to move to have a life they enjoy

Fallguy when you've been to Houston, what areas of the city did you go for business and/or pleasure?
