For a while it was a battle who would come in last.

I am actually probably one of the biggest minorities on the OT, I mean like the OT 10 or the mythical unicorn but I left this shite hole state for good 23 years ago only
to return. I moved to H-town for an O&G position and was lured back to Monroe for a damn good job opportunity with ownership of the company I work for. I am from here btw and I did still bounce back here from time to time to visit relatives and for work. The only downside to my job is that it has no health insurance, so my wife, who taught in Texas for our entire time there got a job teaching here.

After talking to my wife on a daily basis, the school system here is a train wreck and so is this town honestly. If it wasn't for my job I would probably shoot myself in the face.

It hasn't fully recovered to where it was from 2009-2014 ish, but it has stabilized from where it was the last several years though. The Lafayette oilfield economy is primarily tied to GOM offshore activity, which has been slow to come back

If I had to move, my first choice would be somewhere in the Pacific Northwest/Alaska/Vancouver area.

I spent a summer in Bellingham in 1997. That area is beautiful. It's 45 minutes or so from the Canadian border.

Not quite like an OT10, it does happen where people move to TX then eventually move back, although not the norm.

What ISD did your wife teach at?

What about the medical field? There are tons of opportunities for people who want to become medical assistants, nurses, doctors, etc.

I've moved out of the BR area twice and ended up back here. Only one was out of state.

Very True. But to me medical has always been the easy out. Every state has a good medical system. I know it's tough to pass the classes, so I'm not knocking it. I'm just saying it's not exclusive to just Louisiana.

Yeah but aren’t you constantly talking about leaving when your kids graduate?

Hospitals staff accountants, marketing, legal, IT, administration etc.

Potentially. I wanted to raise my daughter around family. I don't hate Louisiana like most of the OT though. I just dislike the terrain and weather.

I've made a good living here for 20 years but I'm not particularly bullish on the state's long term prospects.

Yeah there’s plenty of opportunities, for much less pay than you’d make in metro Atlanta or metro Houston.

It hasn’t stabilized

I was as bullish on Lafayette as anyone for a while but being back over the winter break opened my eyes

Absolutely zero new construction in city limits. Downtown has empty store fronts all over, the legal market is collapsing. Things are not good at all

I work for GP and they are laying off 2/3's of the workforce.

For shite pay. You can make more doing the same work in other cities. You can make a shitload more as say a nurse on the West Coast. Yes, the cost of living can be higher, but there's plenty of places and ways you can do it and still come out way ahead.

Agreed....nurses in Louisiana have some of the shittiest pay in the country.

Just moving out of Louisiana is a guaranteed pay raise.

And like you said....you can make $$$ and still live somewhere that doesn’t have a crazy COL.

Sorry to hear that. I didn't connect the dots. I certainly heard about the GP closure. There are many opportunities in TX and so I thought I read Exxon is looking into hiring many for one of their facilities in TX. Hope something comes up soon.

How is the rest of Zachary doing? People I talked to didn't seem to think it'll get that big of a sting saying 1/2 the GP employees already commute.
