The next day, we stopped in Verona and two Aussies ]and I stopped at Il Ippopatamo, a European chain, and had a great bottle of wine and a great margherita pizza.

"Two Aussies" is an important detail. If they were Aussies, it's almost certain they were not Two Gentlemen of Verona.

If I'm going to Europe I'm going to look at different landscapes, architecture, try new food, and just generally be in a different place.
Now doesn’t that sound better?

I’m not going to deal with sitting in a tube for 9 hours, being jet lagged, sleeping on a small bed and overpay for microwaved food in a tourist area. I’m gonna put in the effort to do a little research and find something decent to eat.

I’ll overpay for a mediocre drink in a touristy place with a good view but eat elsewhere.

The ones in the city squares with the large picture menus, outdoor seatings, and middle eastern/indian guys trying to hustle you to eat there…Why? Is the food actually good?

The middle class ruined travel and destinations pretty much.
Many of those restaurants probably had some other more historical or better place to eat that was pushed out by thr lowest common denominator.

It sounds fine.

It’s still just not something I’m that into.

I like food. I know what food I like. I will try new food. I’m not making it a big part of my trip.

Weisswurst in Munich is good. Being 18 and allowed to drink was awesome too.

18 in Bavaria is 2-3 years late!

have you ever been to Basilicata or Puglia? if so, how was the tourism situation? I know they've become more popular recently

Been to Taranto, which is in Puglia.

Not many Greek ruins left, not that I expected many. It was July. There was a fair amount of tourists there. Mostly Asians.

Seems most Europeans head to Istria and other places on the eastern Adriatic for the summer and Americans stick to the more well known places.

You left out a few billion Asians.

I don't think most of this thread realizes the OP is most likely talking about places like this

quote:

The couple was charged 800 euros, which is about $860, for four crab legs, a Greek salad and two mojitos

It's not $20 hamburgers.
