Exactly. I have a few friends from college who are pretty good looking chicks with great jobs. Once they got the wedding, the kid, and experienced a few years of marriage, they were ready to roll to the Sex and the City lifestyle. The independent, financially stable woman is more risky than the housewife IMO.

Correlation doesn't necessarily equal causation. Making a decision to marry is a sign of responsibility, responsible people make better decisions, people who make better decisions by and large make more money. Stands to reason that married couples would build wealth faster. It also has to do with child-rearing, a single parent will be spending more money on childcare than a two-parent household, wherein the parents can jointly juggle work and childcare.

it's mostly the dual income/resources that allows the couple to build wealth faster
motivation to be more successful (provide for family) is also a large part
