Well, the pastor and his family sure plead guilty to abuse and confessed to satanic ritual practices. So I think it substantiates rather than invalidates the Satanic Panic.

I think what was invalidated was the "Satanism" part of it. It was just ordinary abuse, and that old Mowbray witch was a Church Lady type who injected Satanism into it... which is not to say that I don't believe in a devil who takes joy in children's suffering. I do. But I don't think he cares all that much whether we draw pentagrams, pervert Christian ceremonies, etc. The Satanic Panic was wrong in how cartoonish it made evil seem... it's not D&D or Halloween costumes. It's much more subtle and enticing.

The satanic panic was never substantiated.

Before Central Thruway was built, you were told not to go down Frenchtown road because of Satanic rituals etc. supposedly going on down there. Farthest I ever went was to a train trestle before turning around.

Look up Bob Larson. He had a radio show in the afternoons in the 80s and 90s where he stoked the flames of the satanic panic. Routinely had guys who called in with fake satanic stories and people called in who were possessed. It was a hoot. People would call in and argue that metal and later grunge were not satanic and he would have arguments about the lyrics of all the bands pointing to devil worship. He was a real POS. The main people affected by this crap we're those who listened to idiots like this or watched Phil Donahue or Geraldo.

We had to contend with Swaggert shutting down concerts and b.s. like that, but karma got Swaggert at a little hotel on Airline Hwy in New Orleans. Can't believe that a-hile still had a congregation after that.

Satan lived in my 80's rock albums.

All you had to do was "play them backwards" to hear him.

When you did, everything sounded like either "I am coming for your soul" or "Your dingaling is a cornicopia", was hard to tell.

I remember it well. Everything from Ozzy, Motley Crue (Shout at the Devil made parents lose their minds), D&D, even the Smurfs were “of the Devil”. But it goes back further. I remember in the 70s when the band KISS was considered Satanic. The rumor was their name was an acronym for “Knights In Satan’s Service”.

Went to a Judas Priest concert in Knoxville, early eighties. Back then weed was smoked outside and inside the arena. Cops would just look the other way. Anyhow there was a preacher outside warning us of the satanic evil that awaited us inside. Some guy walked up to the preacher and offered him a toke, place went nuts. Side note, this was prior to Halford coming out as gay.

I remember the O.G. Karen, Tipper Gore, getting her knickers in a twist over rock music and Dee Snider testifying before Congress about it.

There is a documentary on HBO where some kids were charged with murder because they wore black etc. I forget the name of it but they didn't seem to have much other evidence on them. Exactly the kind of stuff you're talking about.

This one? I do remember how funny it was watching Al Gore's wife question Dee Snider and him making her sound dumb as hell.

Looking back, the Satanic panic stuff was stupid growing up in a rural area. Everyone knew everyone else. Were the Satanic people tourists who drove in after dark for their rituals? Honestly.

I’m surprised the Vampire murderers from the mid-1990’s don’t get talked about here more. They were living under the I-10 bridge in Baton Rouge when they were caught.

The Satanic Panic was real in thought back then. You have to remember the internet didn't exist at all. It was rumors & word of mouth talk that made it into something it really wasn't. 90% of the Metal bands who used Satanic lyrics & imagery did it strictly to get attention & sell records. Were there some crazy kids who did stupid stuff out in the woods & in groups? Yes. But most of it was just what it was called. Satanic Panic.

I recall Bill Elder with local news New Orleans did a segment on it specifically some cattle that were killed and mutilated under suspicious circumstances. Around the Hammond area iirc.
quote:

it could very well be your next door neighbor who was a secret Satanist.

Not quite that bad.
quote:

Parents feared that Ozzy Osbourne was the Antichrist and that heavy metal was the devil’s music.

To be fair, many metal bands deliberately promoted that image for marketing purposes although I don’t think any really were. Motley Crue, Iron Maiden, KISS, Ozzy, many more.

Sad thing is, AntiChrist isn’t just Satan Worshippers, it’s also those who deny Christ and oppose any mention of his gospel. Secularists and many otherwise normal people who probably don’t consider themselves “Antichrist” pretty much are.

A lot of the TV preachers pushed that narrative and so feeble minded people started believing it. Tipper Gore used that panic to push for and get warnings put on albums.

There was a whole series of investigative reports on the news in New Orleans in the 80's with the journalist Bill Elder. There were animal carcasses found with ritualistic markings around Covington. I was in school at the time and remember the stories of my best friend's brother that worked at the logging camps north of Covington around Goodbee and Folsom. He said they used to hear chants during the night and supposedly a few of them came across a coven that was having a ritual. Most of these stories were hearsay, but there were some elements that did go unexplained.

Bill Elder was a boss and a great journalist.

very odd stuff on PR nav canal too near talisheek, ran into some of the oddest looking folks I've ever encountered a couple of times there. Friend of mine's dad that was in fed law enforcement told us "that ain't a good place to be" when we told him exaclty where we were fishing and hunting.
