Judging only by the few people I know IRL to have this... it’s seems like more of a personality disorder and docs probably came up with this dx out of desperation and annoyance.

I know person with it. Of course she is a white woman who weighs 300lbs, collects disability, and also claims carpal tunnel although she has zero issues using her hands to play on her phone or do whatever she wants.

My girlfriend has this and I have never once heard her complain about it. The only reason I know is when I first went to give her a back massage she said to not press too hard on her back. It doesn't seem to be much of a disability to me.

In due time she will suddenly claim a little discomfort and of course you will believe her. Why wouldn't you? She isn't a complainer and this is a real disease she is living with.
Maybe it gets better for a while. She is a tough one. Uh oh, another bout. You are there for her; wash and fold all the clothes and make sure she is as comfortable as possible. Buy her favorite dinner. So brave.
Only this time, it is worse. She just can't stop 'the pain.' You know it is real, because when you used to massage her it didn't hurt.
Her flare ups are so bad you have to carry the load, she would if she could is what you tell yourself.
Fast forward and you are wearing down fast. You want to keep doing it all for her, but nothing seems to help. She isn't in the shape she once was because of the pain. She can't do what she did, because of the pain. She is a bitch all the time, because of the pain.
So you try to find a treatment. You bring her to her doctors and hope for any good news.
Then, one day, you try the internet. You read about how there is really no such thing. It can't be tested for, proven or best of all...disproven. You realize you have sacrificed your life taking care of a selfish twat.

It’s real. But it’s also the GOTO diagnosis when the docs have no clue. The docs gave me Fibromyalgia meds for years. Finally figured out it was a tumor wrapped around my radial nerve. frickers!

You just gave proof that it's not real. Sure there are cases of misdiagnosis with any disease. Fibromyalgia is used as a "catch all" disease to make crazy people feel better and justify a treatment plan. The drugs used to treat fibromyalgia are antidepressants.

No. I had a quack diagnose me with it when he was too lazy to figure out where my back pain was coming from. Told him to FO and found a Dr that did his due diligence and found the source and fixed it.
