I look back at my own decision to leave and not stay with them.
I once had a pastor tell me during a difficult time in my life, "You can't drive forward looking in the rearview mirror." Don't spend too much time lamenting decisions that are in the past. Try to adapt and make the most of the present situation. Hopefully things will work out as best they can.
Good luck and God's speed.

Do not beat yourself up or listen to the many dipshits here second guessing you.
We all make the decisions we need off the information we have, some work out and some we learn from.
Hopefully your wife and kid do get evacuated to Russia, at least there is no fighting there.
Once in Russia you should be able to get her help some way. I doubt Russia is going to lock down a woman and child, they are a low threat.
I would start researching 3rd party countries that might bridge Russia to the USA for transit and not wait on Biden.

I think things would be 10x as difficult if you had stayed. At least you can do what you can from the US, if you’d stayed you would be taking up scarce resources and be helpless.

Well, if you have a baby that needs care, what better choice do you have?

Assuming she gets to Russia and they allow my American daughter in, I believe they can move on to another country about as soon as they get plane tickets. She can go to another country with her son and we wait there together until perhaps Biden lets him in or she leaves her son with her sister and she comes back to the states.
My main concern now, and has always been, would be to get her out of Ukraine. I don't know if that will be possible and if it does happen it will not be comfortable or easy. Once she is out, she has the credit and debit cards to fly. There should be numerous countries she could fly to once out of Ukraine.

It actually would have been much worse. I would have been killed or detained and I can say that with little doubt now. My wife and the 20 other people staying in her neighbors house might have been detained and questioned as well for harboring an American. My family wouldn't have the option of evacuating to Russia with me. We would be out of money to buy plane tickets. I could go on. All that said, I would be there with them right now if I could.

Do not know your financial situation, but if she is out of Ukraine on next contact I would get over to Europe for staging.

Don't listen to the Karens here. You know 10x more about what's happening there than any of us here and made a choice for survival. Hope things work out for you in the end.

You being out was better and your daughter might help being a US Citizen.
The last thing Russia needs from a PR standpoint is holding US infants hostage.
There is a lot of misinformation going around, but this is not Soviet Russia invading.

The dynamics of this conflict is a bit different than most. Russians and Ukrainians like each other and share relatives and friends. This is why the protest are happening in Russia and a big reason Ukrainians didn't think Putin would do this. She is right next to the Russian border, Poland is two days away at best through a war zone. If she is allowed in Russia with the baby. She can get her son to her sister and buy plane tickets out of there. This is all assuming she can leave Lisichansk.

To be fair, I dont think Russia really gives two shits about bad PR. They are flat out lying about everything. Including denying bombing ANY civilian targets. In Russia, they make up their own "PR"

I have an American buddy that flew into Moscow a couple of weeks ago to be with his pregnant fiancé. He took Turkish Air out of Istanbul. He was held up by the FSB and questioned at the airport for a few hours but was eventually let in. This guy works in the defense industry and holds a security clearance and he was still let in. He plans to take Turkish air out after the baby is born. I haven’t talked to him in about a week though.

Have her go to Russia, fly to Turkey then fly to the US.

Pardon my ignorance on the subject, but Russia isn't at war with America. Would they really detain them because you were American? Now, granted someone might cap you out of spite, but I don't know if I believe Russia would be rounding up Americans. We as Americans can fly into Russia right now as Citizens, can't we? I agree with a previous poster. I think while they might detain and question, they would let your wife and kid come through because your kid is American. Unless of course, Russia is trying to get America involved. Then that would be the publicity they would want out there to try and draw the Americans in.

Most people don’t realize how close the countries are on many levels. I didn’t know til recently but there are a ton of Ukrainians settled in Russia’s Far East, having immigrated over the years.

Separating facts from fiction is a little difficult but this what I know. According the American embassy website, Americans found in the Separatist regions of Luhansk or Donetsk before the invasion were detained. Sometimes for hours, sometimes for days. This was before the invasion.
Basically they would want to know why I was there. They could also question people I am with. There is no way for me to know how friendly they would be, how long it would last or what they would do with me after. It doesn't scare me but I wouldn't want someone else drug into it, especially my wife.

Americans need a visa to enter Russia. My daughter does not have a visa, so it could possibly complicate things.

This would be the most likely plan if they are able. There are a ton of flights from Russia to Istanbul. The wife and I spent 10 nights there before we were married.
