If your family immigrated to the U.S. it would be crucial to know where they came in at, and it is possible that their last name was spelled how it sounded to the immigration officers versus how it was actually spelled. This was common in those days with people who did not speak English.
Interesting.

I've never met another white person with my last name, but a Facebook search shows that there are some others. Mostly a Mexican name although that's not where my name comes from

Here's a list of some of the largest slaveowners on ancestry
Ancestry.com
Seriously just google. Lots of people doing that kind of research. Find out all you can and then it may take some legwork.

Very true.
We thought my grandfather's surname was Germanic but upon tracing my maternal Grandfather's lineage we found out that when they immigrated from Ireland the Germanic spelling of the surname was used instead of the English/Irish spelling.

I started ancestry.com recently. Most of my dad's side goes back to 1600's in america. The census records show who had slaves. So try that. Example, ksayetiger's forth grandpa on my grandas side owned 600 acers in north carolina, had seven whites people on the household and 20 slaves

Yeah. Most people in the south are either French (settled in La) or Irish (settled around the Ap mountains.). Very few people owned slaves, and very few actually have Native American blood. We drove them out.

Unfortunately, it means you're black. Please leave any Subaru's and any well fitting clothes with the concierge on the way out.

How'd you search?
can't remember where I found it, but I used to know where there was a registry of plantations and their owners along with the number of slaves that each owned in the area where my ancestors have lived since they immigrated...though they eventually became prominent landowners, my ancestors were not listed at all.

There were a good bit of German and Hungarians as well in Louisiana. My family immigrated from Germany in the late 1800's through New Orleans and settled in the Northern area of St. Tammany Parish. I was able to trace my lineage to when my Greatx4 Grandfather came from Germany in 1880, but nothing about where in Germany he came from.

Does this potentially mean my ancestors were slave owners
Yes. Most former slaves took their old masters last name when they became free.

As others have said, it is certainly possible, but not definite. The only way to know for sure is to trace your lineage back to the 1850a and 60s and then use that information to look at the slave schedules that were a part of the 1860 census to see if your family owned them. Slaves were not restricted to large plantations. I know that two of my g-g-g grandfather's had small households and if they did any farming it was for personal use. But both households had two or three slaves to help around the house.
Ancestry is a great site with a lot of information, but stay away from the member trees as you build yours. People will outcrop in their tree without the due diligence and get things really screwed up.

Sounds like they owned alot for the name to be spread that far. Do you ever wake up in the middle of the night with the sudden urge to horsewhip a certain demographic?

My 5th grade homeroom teacher was a black lady with the same last name as me. That was kind of awkward.
