My parents >>> his parents, but I'd still be fine with any/all of them coming to live with us.

For a family of 2 I would say 1200 sq ft. With 4, I would think it's possible but it will be cluttered.
I see fall says his family of 4 lived in a house just over 1300 sq ft with no problem..
If people were to get rid of everything they absolutely didn't need, it would probably be a lot easier to live in something smaller.

450 sq ft. Preferably nestled in the forest in the Ozarks. After reaching old age (still got a few good years left) done figured out you don't need much to be happy. A good loving woman, a hot cup of coffee, a faithful dog, and a gorgeous sunrise.....and God.

My house in SF was 550 sq ft
living space, but had a walk out basement of same size so lots of storage. was manageable by myself. With someone was hard.

Kids moved out. Our retirement house is 1200 square foot 2 bedroom 1 bath in a great location with a great layout. Not much to clean and super comfortable.
My guest house I am building is around 1100 living. The wife and I will be moving into it when I finish so we can remodel our house.
Our first home was 1350, our home now is 2550,3200 under the roof. Way to big for us now. Kind of hoping our daughter and family would move into our house, but she already has two other houses.

Not a day goes by that my wife and I don’t dream about this.

Wife and I are looking to downsize. Currently we live in 3600 sq ft heat and air.
Funny thing is almost everything we look at on zillow that we like is around 3k as ft.
We want one story but almost everything we like is two story.
We've found one house and we both love it, it's just the matter of selling ours and offering on that one in the right window.

Retirement and trying to down size will be a bitch due to all the junk we have going on 40 years married.
We are in a great location in somewhat country living. Problem here is that our yard is way to big. 5+ac.
I own a lot of land all around us that I can't take care of it anymore. Gave it to our kids. Our son passed away and our daughter and SIL doesn't have the time to take care of the place.
Maybe one day our grandson will.
I wanted to buy out a place next to my place as I did in the pass, but that is kind of hard to do due to not being able to take care of what I have now. Besides, the price for 17ac is $189000.

Funny thing
My wife and I have talked about staying where we are but adding on
shite you not. We love where we live(our house sits on the highest point on our road that is two miles long and has seven houses) but we both hate going up and down stairs. So we have seriously contemplated adding a two car garage/office/laundry room on one end of the house that would have only 3-4 steps
this means turning an 800 sq ft garage into a man cave.
We're seriously thinking about adding 1600 sq ft to our damn house because we're tired of walking up and down stairs.
shite gets really complicated

You dream about you and your wife sharing a bathroom?
What the frick is wrong with you?
Our daughters moved out on Dec 26th, my wife moved all her bathroom stuff to their bathroom on Dec 27th.
She never looked back.
She still does her hair and stuff in our bathroom but all her baths and stuff are in the other bathroom.
Strange getting old

I lived in 860 with wife, toddler, two dogs. Lasted two years, couldn't take it anymore, had to upsize.

I grew up in a 1400 sq ft suburban house, family of 5. Shared a bedroom with my sibling. My best friend lived in a 1200 sq house with 6 kids and parents. 3 girls shared one bedroom, 3 boys the other. I always envied their bunk beds.
While watching House Hunters on TV I noticed that every family says they need a separate bedroom for each kid, anything else is unthinkable. Seems like a real first-world issue. Sharing a room is a great way to learn conflict resolution.

Our house is about 1300 sf, 2 bedroom bath and half for me, the wife and a 13 year old daughter. Our argument is that the wife wants more space but my argument is I will have it paid off in a few more years and won't have to deal with a mortgage. we have an acre for the dogs and are close to both our work.
I am looking at building a master bath and a big walk in closet for the wife currently which would bring us to around 1500 sf.

Instead of giving up that garage space, couldn't an architect figure out a way to convert part of the regular downstairs into a master suite? I'd hate to give up my garage!
My SO and I are searching for our 'forever home' and finding one with a first floor master is very high on the priority list.

Why is that? The only thing that I come up with is having to walk up stairs being older.
But that's why they make these...
