Interesting.

But you have to ask yourself is just how sustainable is this business model really? Does it have staying power in the age of online retail getting stronger and stronger?

It's been packed everytime I've gone.

And I'd bet that building is paid for...so it's a minimal expense. Buy most of my button downs and golf shorts there.

Can't beat $12 roundtree and york button downs and $9 moisture wicking golf shorts.

Florida at Airline? It's not that bad of an area. There are far worse areas in BR.

This, the mall just drew in shitty crowds. It’s not like amazon is setting up shop on the middle of Winborne

The holdout Dilliards may be a money laundering setup like mattress firm...I’d like to see their financials.
Wait people legit think mattress firm is a money laundering front?

I'd say Dillards is going to make Amazon pay a steep price for that property. Well done move, giving the competitor the finger, on something they want.

frick them, they won't last long and this will bring jobs to the area that Dillard's simply can't.

And the Walmart right there because it's the closest one to NBR. I don't have any issues being in that area, even at night. He said he'd sit in traffic for hours to avoid going through there. Made no sense to me

I understand that, but people are assuming that this will somehow bring economic development into that area. It won’t.

You don’t think 1,000 jobs in what is currently an abandoned mall will improve the area? Nobody is expecting it to turn into Bocage, but adding a ton of jobs in the heart of NBR would certainly improve the area from where it stands now. Not to mention the ancillary jobs that are created just from more people working in that area.

I don’t know how solid that “1,000 jobs” number is, but it’s certainly nothing to scoff at if true. That’s nearly the same number of full time jobs as the Exxon Baton Rouge Refinery, though they would presumably be significantly lower paying.

ETA: And while it sucks to hear that Dillard’s is keeping the project from moving forward, I’m a little confused by all of the “Louisiana gubment at work” rhetoric in this thread. What does the government have to do with Dillard’s refusing to sell?

I used to work down the street from there when that mall still had a Chick-fil-A

This is what other people can't grasp. A Cick fil a couldn't make money there. That's pretty obsurd.

It would basically become a business park, not some retail center.

I've seen a similar structure be made into a bakery and distribution center. They make bread for huge national restaurant chains and Kroger. It provides 24/7 jobs.

Dillard’s thinks they can strongarm Amazon?? What a joke. Amazon can buy Cortana and 3 more tracts that size in BR if they want to.
Dillard’s probably overplayed their hand and Amazon probably looked more closely at Baton Rouge and decided to take the holdout as a sign and take a step back from the whole thing.

Eh fair enough, I may have gotten a little carried away there. But it is in NBR, unless your definition of North Baton Rouge is Scotlandville.

NBR use to be everything north of Choctaw. Then the dividing line edged south. Finally it reached Florida. But anything east of Airline wasn’t considered NBR. Cortana was never NBR.

Well, when Amazon:

1) Lowers their cost so it's cheaper than the clearance center

2) Starts accepting cash

3) Can promise same day delivery that will safely (i.e. not get stolen) to their homes

Then yes, Amazon will overtake them.

The Dillard's Clearance model is a very interesting one, and very uniquely positioned.

My understanding is that Dillard’s owns that location outright as opposed to leasing it. Probably as part of getting the location from Maison Blanche to begin with.

It's not uncommon for anchor store buildings to have separate owners from the rest of the mall.

Yep. And on top of that, when the original stories came out about the Amazon development, Dillard’s put out statements saying they weren’t planning to close.

They’d already sealed off all exits into the mall so Amazon could have the mall itself and all other anchors it could buy.

That is my understanding as well. And they know Amazon cannot do this project without their property.... thus they are holding out for more $$$$$

Sounds like Amazon called their bluff. I guess we'll see if it's just part of the negotiation or if they pulled the project.
