One of the reasons I didn't go into Pharmacy. Great starting salary but not much room for improvement it seems.
115k+ isn't anything to sneeze at though

Honestly, it's the same in most medical professions. There really isn't much room for advancement, but you have a nice starting salary. My wife and I talk about this often, she's also going into a medical field (Audiology) and it's pretty much the same.

Unless you open your own pharmacy
The bad thing about that is, it takes many years to build up a strong customer base, plus you gotta borrow a shite load of money, on top of what u already owe
It's very difficult for an Indy pharmacy to compete with big chains
They have better prices, hours, more drugs in stock, ect

Yeah that's pretty bad
If you make 115k a year a $1per hour raise isn't gonna cover inflation so you basically get a pay cut.
And I couldn't imagine how boring that must be

For most medical professions it's easy to make more salary if you open/buy your own office.
Pharmacists just have it bad bc pharmacy is so corporate based now with walgreens/CVS/RiteAid/Walmart/etcc.. that it's hard for them to open up their own businesses.
Medicine is getting the shaft with Obamacare at the moment as well, which is why I switched away from Med School also

Definitely, my good friend got out of retail because of the shitty work hours and schedule. He's at a 9-5 home health gig putting together chemo cocktails now. He's really happy with the change, even though it lowered his salary. He didn't have student loans, so I guess the reduction in pay didn't hurt him too much.
I think he eventually wants to branch out and start an independent pharmacy.

Posted by kjntgr Yea that's right, if he and his wife are both pharmacist, 2 k a month ain't bad
Put a nice rack on the wife and she could make better than that with a 4 year degree with no debt doing nothing but bringing doctors lunch

This is definitely true. In audiology you can make bank off of hearing aid commissions. I've heard it's the same for pharmacy. Definitely a lot more work than working out of a hospital, though.

Is Audiology like... Speech therapist? I used to know a girl who was doing that and going to speech therapy school..? (I think?? lol didn't know this existed) and I think she said she would be an audiologist

I was about to check if I was on the Money Board until I saw this and realized it was still the OT.

Well it's still less than inflation at 135k

They share an undergrad degree (communication disorders). Speech therapy is a masters degree, while audiology is a doctorate. Audiology is the treatment and diagnosis of hearing disorders. Very similar to an optometrist, who treats vision.
ETA: in layman's terms: a speech pathologist treats patients who have difficulty speaking or swallowing, while an audiologist treats patients who have difficulty with hearing or balance.

I See what your saying but the dollar a year thing isn't set in stone, if the average salary goes up across the board, walmart would have to match
I've only been a pharmacist 2 years and that what my raise was each year but no one knows what it could be in 5 or 10 years
I have a friend who's a pharmacist, she's 45, when she started as a pharmacist with walmart in 1992 she made around 40k
Now it's over 120 k
So in 22 years she's gone up 80 k per year in salary
That's way more than a dollar a year
