Like just one really long line? Instead of two lines? That would work but not always gonna have that room. The gap allows for lateral regrowth, by leaving grass on both sides.
Bermuda spreads via rhizomes and stolons (lateral stems). Imagine the linear patterns like a giant verticutter. You're severing the lateral stems, but by leaving a gap you have lateral stems regrowing from each side only needing to cover the width of one divot.
The concentrated pattern has grass on both sides but the gap to fill is greater, thus takes longer.
I would say leave a gap at least the width of a divot. And more if space allows. When the grass greens up, take a look at divots regrowing and recovering. You'll be able to see the lateral stems filling it in.

Last spring I went to about 4-5 different ranges in the tuscaloosa area and they were all chewed up or sandy. The linear theory is nice if you're on a pristine range, but that's rarely ever the case in my experience.

Do your part. That's all you can do. Ball marks aren't always gonna be repaired, but doesn't mean you shouldn't repair yours.
It's not really a "theory". It's just how grass works. Linear is the best combination of regrowth and efficient use of space. Perhaps if everyone subscribed to the "theory", the ranges wouldn't be chewed up.
Some ranges are just too high traffic for their size. Nothing you can do about it. If people keep coming to hit, then they obviously don't mind. But I'll always do my part to leave space for the next person and make the correct agronomic decision for the grass to recover quickly.

Spring Golf Etiquette What is the proper etiquette for responding to being hit into while on an obviously packed course? I have always either hit the ball back at the guy or held the ball up to show it to the hitter then chunk it as far as I can into a lake/bayou/waterway or woods. Is this correct?
Got hit into the entire back nine on a packed course once drive after drive so on 14 I hit it back at them. Didn't happen again until 17 they hit one up on the green while I was putting. I just slowly picked the ball up stuck it in my pants and rubbed it on my balls and put it right back where it was for them to see.

I guess you're studying agronomy at state?

Kills me when I am waiting on people who are searching for their ball along out-of-bounds. I give them a minute before I have to ask to play through. If you don't find it by then, it's gone, just keep playing. I find it so frustratingly rude of people to hold others up for no reason.
20 practice swings also kills me.

Oh I agree but when there is nowhere for me to go and you are hitting your drives past me and onto the green when I am putting that's not right.

Yeah. That's annoying.
I was almost hit by a wayward shot (I mean, the dude sliced it easily 60 yards) right over my head. No Fore. Nothing. That could easily have killed me if it hit me in the head. I could hear the swoosh. We considered hitting it back to them, but instead just did the "What the frick?" motion back to them.

Glad I started this thread to get people thinking about how they act on the course.
I'll add another. When entering a bunker, if feasible, do not walk down a steep face of a bunker. You can cause damage that will lead to erosion of the bunker face
This isn't always an option, especially if your ball lands in the face of the bunker, but if your ball is in the middle of the bunker, try to walk in on one of the gentler slopes. Bonus: easier to rake afterwards

Who the hell rakes a bunker?
Just kidding, I always rake them.

I think for the first time ever I hit a bunker shot with a knee on the ground the other day. I had no choice but to put my other foot into the face, and I raked the hell out of it after. Skipped the ball through the bunker and onto the green doe

This happened yesterday:
I got stuck behind 3 old men, on had to use a cane to walk to his ball then hit.
On one hole, the group playing the anointing hole hit one into our fairway, this caused a pow wow to break out I I the fairway. This was on18. They could have gone into the club house in a few and talked. I finally snapped and yelled "Hey" they let me hit and continued to sit there and talk. In the clubhouse, no apologies were given either way. One guy tried to give me shite. I asked him to sign my card as a witness bc he watched me all day and didn't let me through. He was not impressed until he saw the 71
I finally got the apology. Did I act incorrectly by yelling?

Why get a guy who didn't play with you to sign your card? I'm confused.
