They had several clues, which led them to speculate that the crew survived the orbiter breakup.

Damn shame that the SRB o-ring manufactor begged nasa to not launch the shuttle.

Quite possibly the worst part of it all is that there's a lot of evidence that most if not all of the crew were still alive until they hit the water.

Onizuka is buried at the Punchbowl in Hawai'i.

Worth visiting to pay respect to him and his mates there.

Yeah, but if the crew compartment had been breached and depressurized, that wouldn't have been enough to prevent them from losing consciousness even after activating their backup oxygen.

At least according to that report linked on the last page.

So... they were possibly unconscious (but not conclusively) when the impact killed them. Hope so, for their sake.

Saw this happen live in person. Was driving from Plano to Grand Prairie, TX for work that morning and saw it in the sky. Was like WTF?!?!.....honestly first thought was that it was a missile or something. I was pretty freaked out.....wasn't until later that day that I found out what had actually happened.

Crazy, and sad. It takes a special type of bravery to ride an explosion into the harsh vacuum of space.

I was in Neurology class when they announced it.

And Resnik may have done this by instinct very rapidly after the explosion, perhaps while they were still in the high G environment. This may have been done in response to the explosion, a breach in the cabin, or shortly after separation.

We just don't know. The only reason we know that one PEAP was activated (Smith's) and one wasn't (Scobee's) was because they remained bolted to the seats. 2 others were found, activated. The other 3? Who knows? Lost in the explosion, impact and the depths of the sea.

I think you are remembering the Columbia in 2003. The Challenger was in 1986. I came home from class at LSU and saw the news on CNN. Went to lunch at Hatcher cafeteria and everyone was just finding out about it. News traveled slow back then.

Wrong shuttle disaster. I happened to be watching when that happened as well.

The NASA accident investigation is very in-depth about the explosion. Fairly long and technical, but its frame-by-frame analysis shows the orbiter's breakup and crew compartment's trajectory emerging from the cloud.

The fact that the press continued to focus their cameras on them watching the breakup was sickening.

Most everyone remembers Challenger.
I doubt most people remember Columbia at all.

It was one of those things that if you experienced it, you probably remember it pretty vividly. Like many other kids at the time, we were watching it live in school.

I was at work. Wife (at the time) called to tell me about it. I turned on the radio and listened to coverage, didn't get to see it til I got home later that day.

I watched it happen while eating a snack between classes at LSU.

Several of my family and friends in Florida saw it in the sky.
