The numbers are actually higher than I expected.
Plenty of people in the world who are making well into six figure range and are miserable.
There are also people who are IRL poor and are happier than ballers.

So they’re saying there’s no difference emotionally from $112k and $9 mil a year? Research seems pretty skewed and subjective.
The article title was worded poorly IMO.
The best way to interpret this study (and studies like it) is that there is a correlation between an incremental increase in income and increases in happiness...to a point. At that point, the correlation falls off rapidly.
Think of it as the point at which whatever suffering you’re experiencing isn’t being driven by a lack of material wealth. At that point, buying more stuff isn’t really solving serious problems for you. That’s roughly upper-middle class for most people, and at that point, additional material wealth doesn’t raise your “baseline” happiness level.
So yes, having “frick you money” allows you to buy a lot of stuff, but what studies show is that after the initial feeling of satisfaction, people typically revert back to their baseline happiness.

Yeah...because it has to be one or the other.

Happiness is an inside job. Not buying this garbage.

Austin, Texas
Salary you need to be happy: $136,500
Salary you need for life evaluation: $123,500
Salary you need for emotional well-being: $78,000-$97,500
Austin is higher than some very big cities with incredible amenities:
quote:
Dallas, TX
Salary you need to be happy: $113,085
Salary you need for life evaluation: $102,315
Salary you need for emotional well-being: $64,620-$80,775

Phoenix, AZ
Salary you need to be happy: $119,070
Salary you need for life evaluation: $107,730
Salary you need for emotional well-being: $68,040-$85,050
Also - Memphis and Oklahoma City have incredibly awesome costs of living:
quote:
Memphis, Tennessee
Salary you need to be happy: $88,515
Salary you need for life evaluation: $80,085
Salary you need for emotional well-being: $50,580-$63,225
quote:
Oklahoma City, OK
Salary you need to be happy: $96,075
Salary you need for life evaluation: $86,925
Salary you need for emotional well-being: $54,900-$68,625
Conclusion: I'm glad I didn't live in Austin before I earned a bigger salary.
Also - why are so many federal employees based in DC? They don't need to be anymore.
quote:
Washington, D.C.
Salary you need to be happy: $182,595
Salary you need for life evaluation: $165,205
Salary you need for emotional well-being: $104,340-$130,425
Oklahoma City and Memphis seem like better deals for federal employees and the taxpayers.

That has more to do with responsibilities than money. Making a shite ton of money as a college student wouldn't have made me less happy.

If money is no problem for you, and you still can't find what makes you happy, you're an idiot.

There are a ton of very rich idiots then. I would venture a guess I run into more unhappy rich people than happy rich people.
