So I am coming in late to this party.... I am not anti EV, but I want to make a comment on this...

quote:

...why would I charge all the way up (since of course it takes 45 minutes to do...)

I believe ( and I could be wrong here so maybe someone can correct me if I am..) that the battery life is dependent on charge cycles. A 5 minute charge is a "cycle" and a 45 minute charge is another "cycle". The charging cycle is not dependent on the time spent charging... So you get closer to the end of the battery life at the same rate with a 5 minute charge as a 45 minute charge. My point is that you are in fact not maximizing your car's efficiency with the "shorter" charging cycles...

If my understanding is correct...

Somewhat. There are a lot of other variables. 100 cycles of level 1 charging is different than 100 cycles of level 3 charging.

No. 1 cycle is typically defined as a full charge discharge cycle. However, testing doesn't go 0-100 all the time unless you're doing a stressed HALT test. Most use 5-90% for a "cycle". All cycles are not created equal.

Is it dependent on the batteries state of charge begin and end, condition, input amperage, length of time.

No.

That point is incorrect.

kWhs in, kWhs out and how hard you're pushing/pulling is what matters.

If you want an EV, go buy one. But don't get the government to make the EPA regs such that everyone is forced to buy one eventually.

Pretty sure the EPA isnt regulating air quality to sell cars. Perhaps they, shocker, are trying to get clean air?

EV has the gay. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Bill knows more about this than I do. My post was to address the idea that you cannot do a long road trip in an EV, so these practices aren't typical of day to day. I believe Tesla recommends charging to 80% but you would up that for a long trip. Occasionally doing so isn't going to wreck the battery. Tesla give you a ton of info on your car and one of them is battery degradation. Both of these cars were bought when they came out and neither has more than 10% battery degradation as of today when I texted him.

They make up 1% of the vehicles on the road but 46% of americans are considering an electric for their next vehicle.

We are still in the "Early Adopters" stage:
