I feel like threads like this show who comes from civilized stock and who is descended from barbarians
People who’s ancestors were conquerors developed the genes to drink alcohol and the conquered didn’t

It’s pretty telling how some people talk about it

The important part is going to be updating people who never asked about your progress as well as slipping in that you've gone dry for health reasons into every conversation you can.

I quit because it was killing me and I was at the bottom. I have a huge problem. I say have because it will always be there. But the 24th of this month will make 4 years.

I've gone from drinking A bourbon or beer almost every evening, to only having a wine or a bourbon at a restuarant or with a nice meal at the house.
So from 5-7 nights a week to a handfull of times a month.
I feel much better. I never slept well and felt inflamation when I drank more than one.
Microdosing is much better for concerts anyway and I dont feel bad afterwards.

Many cardiologists recommend small amount of red wine consumption for decades.
Best to omit if overall healthy is a priority

As I get older, it’s less about just drinking to get hammered and more about just enjoying the drink. I can wind down for the night and make a really quality cocktail and enjoy that and be done.

I can do the same with one decent beer.

Nah. That’s been debunked. It probably isn’t going to be detrimental to health but it’s not considered “healthy”.Replace the small amount of red wine with green tea or matcha tea and it’s healthier.
Again, in moderation, drinking alcohol is probably not going to be detrimental to health.
The main reason people drink alcohol is to get a buzz.

I guess I'm a barbarian cause I can drink like a Viking.

Is there actually a scientific benefit to that?
I seem to remember people questioning those studies because people who have a glass of wine with dinner tend to be upper class and upper class people tend to have better health outcomes in general because they have lots more money and free time to throw at the problem, have lower levels of stress and tend to avoid other hazards.
Like if I told you people who live in 10,000 square foot houses tend to live longer than people who live in 1000 square foot houses would you assume the house had anything to do with that?

There are zero health benefits from drinking liquor or beer but there may be a few related to certain red wines and even that is highly subjective

"I say have because it will always be there."
I'm glad you said that; it's very important for us who lost control. I hit bottom this past year, almost lost everything important to me. Went to rehab, had some great therapists and met some really good people who happen to be addicts. One thing I learned - or better, was reminded of - was that you can't fight your addiction, but you can develop strategies to live with it. People talk about quitting with sheer willpower, but that's an illusion. The addiction is a part of you, and you have to accept that fact to be happy. Otherwise you'll end up in a constant state of exhaustion living a life centered around that battle, a battle you'll likely lose in the long run.
I'm lucky in that I don't think about it much and don't crave it, but that doesn't take away from the fact that it's there, and always will be.
