I appreciate a waiter or waitress, particularly during rush times, still managing to get my order right, having a good personality that makes me feel welcome and checking on me consistently. I know how much the average person sucks and I see awful customers treating wait staffs like shite for no good reason so I try to be as pleasant an experience for them as they are for me. I typically give 20% and if I'm eating out on a holiday or something like that, a couple times a year I like to leave a big tip.
I couldn't imagine having to deal with fat whales that make up our society all day who whine and complain about everything so I really try to bless my service industry brothers and sisters, especially when they're awesome.

Yes! And I'd add a Sunday to that as well. We don't eat out often but when we do it's usually on holidays or Sundays. I appreciate people working those days to support those who have to travel.

We got takeout from Texas Roadhouse the other day and I was shocked that, when finishing my online order, the 10% tip option was preselected...instead of one of the higher options. I went with that one because they are just making sure everything is correct and then bringing it out to me.
BTW, the family meal take out options at Texas Roadhouse are a pretty good deal.

went to a really nice restaurant in Bordeaux last summer, the lady that took us out runs a winery for my wife's boss, it was a very expensive, long, multi-course dinner, several bottles of wine, etc., I tried to do an end around and tell the head waitress to bring the tab to me but it had been pre-arranged by out hostess(probably on the boss' tab,

i'll never and have never tipped 15% for sub-par. 8% sub-par and 15% for good service.

I get annoyed when I go somewhere like a ice cream store, or I pick up an order from somewhere, and when you pay, they always have a place for "tip"....or the pad asks you how much you want to tip. And the employee hovers over you....almost making you feel bad for not tipping something. (almost...). I have gotten to where I pretty much pay cash for whatever I'm getting, and I give them as close to the exact amount as I can so they don't hit me up and I don't have to deal with that shite. I understand why you tip a waiter/waitress.....I don't know why I should tip some shlub for handing me my food at the front, or giving me a scoop of ice cream. Tip shaming is a real thing....

I know Trump needed to win Nevada so new rules but there are also carve outs. Also, I was referring to older conversations.
For the record, they should pay taxes on every dollar.

Since covid almost everything in life now sucks and we're getting less for paying more.

If I do my job sub par, I get fired. I sure as hell don't get a 15% bonus.
Sub par = 0 tip.
Part of the problem is that (for servers in restaurants, at least) it’s not seen as a 15% bonus. Servers generally get paid $2.13/hour because the federal government assumes they will make at least minimum wage when accounting for tips. In other words: the federal government sees tips as part of their base income, not a bonus.
Another factor, at least when I was in college, was that they assumed you made 18% on cash sales unless you manually reported your cash tips. So you actually lost money (due to taxes) when you got stiffed on cash sales. It generally came out in the wash though, and wasn’t worth the BS of manually reporting everything. At least not to 19-year-old me.

Stupid take. Any adult knows the server can't control the quality of the food.
I don’t think anyone who’s ever actually waited tables would make this assumption.
For better or worse, customers generally have a difficult time separating the service from the overall experience.
All of that being said, I think it’s the tipping expectation at counter service places that really rubs people the wrong way. There are cases like OP or the ridiculous 40% tip tweet in this thread that are obviously bad, but the constant tip options every time you pay for something with a credit card are the biggest source of fatigue, IMO.

Another “tip” discussion thread!

My bill came out to $26. I gave the waitress two twenty dollar bills in the folder 15 minutes before the end of the game. She just kept it without giving change back. I didn’t say anything but I’m just not coming back.

The problem with those numbers(besides the fact that its a 40% tip) is that even no frills restaurants these days are pricey. Its not hard to rack up that much of a bill while getting fairly minimal service. I'm not tipping 20 bucks on an 80 dollar bill just because your beers are $10, and your bedazzled Brussel sprouts are $20.

I mean.. if your default is to tip 10% at a restaurant for a “good job” and 15% for an “outstanding job” then yeah, you’re kind of a shitty tipper.
It’s all relative though. At the place I worked in college, I generally made around 20% of sales each night. So for every person who left 10% that meant there was another who left 30% (or, more likely, something like 25% on a larger ticket). On that spectrum you’d be a pretty shitty tipper.
But there are definitely restaurants that cater to a clientele who see 10% as generous.. and on that spectrum, maybe it would be generous. So it kind of depends where you go out to eat I guess.
Most adults I know generally tip in the 18-20% range. I usually tip about 20%.. more if the service was great, less if it was bad. I don’t know if I’ve ever stiffed a server, but if I did it would probably have to be because of something egregious (not just because the service was below average).
Also the trend of weird service fees and whatnot really muddies the waters. I can’t really fault people for taking the stance that any kind of “service fee” or similar is, effectively, part of the tip.
