I went to lunch with a friend. When the bill came, we received separate checks. Then he asked for the alcohol to be on a separate check from the food. I thought he would write off the meal as a business expense. However, he ended up tipping for the food but not for the alcohol. I asked him why, and he said that the waitress didn't pour the drink or bring us our drinks, so why would he tip on that?
I joked, " Well, she didn't cook the food either." He kind of ignored that comment.

Fair or foul?

Fail. Waitress has to tip out the bartender.

Servers generally have to tip out the bar.

Your friend is an a-hole who has clearly never worked in a restaurant.

Friend is trashy. I may calculate my tip differently for alcohol depending on what it is, but I'll still tip for the service.

It's a who cares for me. He tipped for the food, unless you drank $40 worth of alcohol, then who cares about that tip.

Is working in a restaurant some badge of honor here?

That is dumb

If he wanted to be a cheap arse he could have just looked at the bill and tipped on the food; but he's too stupid and only knows the "double the tax for the tip" rule of thumb

One of the more trashy things I’ve ever heard.

Including drinking at lunch on a weekday. Get a job

This they went out to lunch I doubt they had more than a couple beers. Congrats on saving like 3 bucks on your tip

Waitress tips out the bartender so he really just shorted the waitress.

Tasteless and reveals ignorance of how an adult dines in a restaurant.
