Those clouds pushing out isn't the best of news with regards to instability. But, this happens like 20 times a year in north Alabama, so hopefully people will be smart this afternoon.

I don’t think I would want the sun to come out in any of these area prior to the storms building

That little storm that went just by Russellville wans't very heavy but had some very interesting and tight strong rotation signatures, it wouldn't surprise me if a small tornado spun up on that one in the last 20 minutes.

Definitely not..

Remember naively thinking on April 27th in Tuscaloosa "oh look the sun is out, they must have been wrong about the severe weather threat" about 4 hours before huddling in a closet with 10 other people.

Yeah, I definitely whiffed on the soundings I looked at. No doubt those numbers support explosive potential.

That generates EHI values about 6 across areas of N. Bama later on, so the SPC MOD is certainly warranted.

Without a doubt. Typically if the SPC upgrades and I'm not near the same thinking, I'm going to re-evaulate my thinking.

I don't see this being a huge outbreak, but tornadoes that form could be long tracked and strong.

That being said I feel like they're just throwing 15% tors out like candy.

West of Birmingham is starting to pop up a little. About 30 minutes ago that just appeared as light rain on radar

I’m sure there is reason to be aware and take precautions but no doubt James Spann will use this event to spread a little fear in order to build his brand.

Which tells you all you need to know about him. Should’ve been fired after his smugness led to Snowmageddon.

SPC uses an ingredients based approach and advances in modeling have allowed forecasters to focus in on smaller aeeas than in the past to identify risk. This allows them more confidence to issue a 15% (or other levels) since that verifies more often the smaller the area. However, forecasting tornadoes remains extremely difficult with lots of questions still unanswered as to why similar environments don't produce similar results and the "bust" is always a potentially good outcome.

From NWS Birmingham:

More data in from the weather balloon instruments in the air. Nearly 3,000 J/kg for convective available potential energy. We plan to conduct another balloon launch towards 4 pm this afternoon if conditions allow.

Jesus. That is way more than enough energy for a Dixie threat.

Also if anyone wants to watch download the "live chasing" app or go to livestormchasing.com.
