I’ve always thought spying is mostly useless nowadays. We already have satellites in place to detect troop movements. The flow of information is too fast to keep anything really secret.

Sometimes a trigger has to be pulled. Or not pulled. Hard to tell at home in your pajamas.

Really not much money for what he did.

It was the 80s. It was a lot more. Apparently he owned sports cars/tailored suits, and a $500k house in Arlington. That same house would likely be worth multiple millions now. My parents bought a house in Arlington in the 90s for $200k and it’s worth almost $2M now with minimal upgrades to it.

He also sent enough cash to his foreign in-laws for them to be noticeably more wealthy as well.

It’d be about $13-14M with an inflation calculator.

Yeah the Russians gave him $4.6 million. When your yearly salary was $60,000 and you get paid that to mostly just tell them who was a traitor on their side, I see why he took it.

Most of the Russians who were our spies did it because they hated Russia and wanted an end to Communism. Ames didn’t hate America. He just wanted easy money.

Yup. Had a secret girlfriend who became his wife and apparently she had a spending habit and he was in bad debt at first.

Shed rack up $400 phone bills in the 80s calling her family in South America.

If I got a $400 bill today for my phone I’d be livid can’t imagine coming up with that in 1985.

They said him suddenly wearing tailor made suits his bosses couldn’t afford was one of the signs that pointed to him being a mole.

I'd bet he was living better than a contemporary Angola inmate only because there were something like 10 of them in the prison that was otherwise empty, so little fighting and such.

You know it was easy living when you make it to 84 in prison. He probably had better healthcare than most Americans.

I think when you are given a life sentence you should never leave the prison. After your death your are cremated and your ashes spread on the prison yard.

No regard for any religious issues. Cremated and dumped.

The vast majority of these guys go undetected or unfound. How many spies can you think of that went to jail? Ames, that Israeli guy, Robert Hansen…. You think the Russians only ever had 3 spies in the cia/fbi or dod ? There’s definitely guys doing this stuff right now that will never get caught.

Think about it - you are never in a car so there is no chance of dying in a motor accident. In most prison there is little manual labor, certainly nothing hefty like working construction, mining, shipyards...

I think our prediliction against cruel and unusual punishment has warped into "dont hurt them". Violent criminals should not be sedentarily drifting off with cable tv and a library.

Clinton allowed China to find out about many spies that subsequently went missing after 2016.
