If you want someone to blame for what Amazon has become (speaking to the consumerism issue not this catalog shite) blame Sears and fricking Roebuck. They were Amazon 150 years ago. They, a wholly American company, had every single aspect that Amazon built before Bezos's daddy popped out of a vagina, but for the foresight to put money into online shopping. That wholly American company, hell.....that true American success story....so fully and completely fricked itself that it barely even exists anymore.
You could buy an entire fricking house from their mail-order catalog, for God's sake!

I'll throw in another one that is about to start having big problems....Hobby Lobby.
It took a group of well-heeled chinese bidness men with a few investors with access to chinese factories and warehouses to show all the chubby white women that their favorite crafts store has been fricking them for years to the tune of about a 350% markup. They're still having a hard time letting those immediate "40% Off" sales go, though, despite the fact that even with that discount they still aren't close to the price of the competition.
I'm talking about Temu, rife with conspiracy and Communist-world-domination-master-plans, that figured out they could get the same shite made in the same factories for the same cost Hobby Lobby was getting, sell it for a fraction of the retail cost, and still make a killing. Some people love to use it, others love to cry about it. You can't deny that it is 100% capitalism at work. Hobby Lobby's hustle was exposed, and now they're having to deal with it.

This is true. I feel like an a-hole buying something in person that I know is $40 cheaper online. A lot of shoes/clothes/electronics fit in this category.

This is why they’ve struggled for the last year or so. Built up a massive distribution footprint to handle Covid volume and then had a bunch of empty buildings when volume came back down. That said, the vast majority of their profits come from AWS. AWS is the main reason they are able to dominate the market in retail - nobody else can compete with them in retail since the competition actually has to make money doing so while Amazon has a separate cash cow.

Products that are bought at all the dollar store outfits come from the same places. They're made in the same factories and shipped from the same warehouses. Hell, if you wanted you could take a few grand and have a shipping container shipped here and go into business. If you were so inclined you could get in touch with those factories and have them make the same products for you with any logo or name you desire stamped on them.

They do. Whether you want to believe it or not. Anything that is a Hobby Lobby store brand comes from the same places. They sell mass-produced garbage just like the rest of them, just with a ridiculous markup. The main difference being their brick and mortar operations.
