100,000 miles and 12 years old is when you should start seeing issues.

Yeah, I'd say 100k miles would be the first checkpoint. I'm not even sure that years would be a factor.

I think today’s model for any consumable like a vehicle or large appliance is to make them purposefully not to last so that you either 1) Forced to pay for expensive repairs 2) Buy a new one. They just don’t make shite that lasts anymore bc they’re not incentivized monetarily to do so.

Pretty much all GM trucks(5.3V8, 6.2V8, 3.0I6), Ford V6, RamI6, Toyota V6 truck engines are failing, recalls abound, fixes are failing. YouTube is full of people having issues with their vehicles
Only half of those are actually having problems, and maybe only 2 (Tundra turbo and GM 6.2, with the 3.0 emerging). The rest are just fine. And that’s been the case always. There’s always been a couple of lemon issues floating around from manufacturing defects.

Find out where a car has been. You really think everyone cleans the undercarriages where they salt roads?

My Tundra is 13 years old and never had a problem. 245,000 miles.

Half is several hundred thousand, so it’s quite a bit.

But, just in case, GM has extended the engine portion of their powertrain warranty to 10yrs, 150,000mi, up from 5yrs/60k mi…

Back in 2019, I bought a 2018 used F150 STX from Carmax that had about 25k miles on it.
Fast forward to today, knock on wood and hope to not jinx things, but I've got about 145k miles on it, and it's been reliable and appears to still be running strong.
The pump for the windshield sprayer appears to have gone out a few months back, and I've just been too lazy to bring it in to get that replaced, but will soon.

I bought one with 50k. It's over 180 now and still going.

Today vehicles, despite all the stifling design restrictions imposed by the government, are indestructible relative to what we had in days past. Worth the money? Thats a debate.
Some appliances are certainly built with designed obsolescence. Vehicles still manage to not be.

Tell me it’s ok to buy 5 or 6 years old and 30k to 50k miles if well maintained, accident free and doesn’t come from up north.
It depends on the Make/Model.
I have a 2007 Nissan Frontier, 96 K miles.
I have just changed the tires and oil so far. Oh, I did have the brake pads replaced a few months back.

Nowadays, a couple months old & couple thousand miles are when the problems start. Sad, but true…
What kind of shite are you buying?

You should be asking “what are the manufacturer’s building “
Seriously, last vehicle I’ve purchased is a 2023 GMC Yukon w/6.2L V8…

That’s a massive recall issue from a part defect. The oil fix is because GM is trying to wait out, which is pretty shitty in comparison to Toyota and will hurt them in the long term.
But not reflective of your average vehicle.

Buy at 108k miles when all the issues are fixed and it will be reliable to 300k miles.

Maybe, maybe not. Still strong sales & demand for the 6.2L V8

But is becoming more commonplace. With increasing gov’t regulations, manufacturers have had to become increasingly creative with engine & fuel management, and the results of real world use of unproven technologies is affecting all manufacturers

transmissions in the EFI era can go hundreds of thousands of miles with just routine fluid changes and timing belts
There is nothing routine about changing the timing belt on most modern vehicles.

I bought a Cat Eye 2005 with 191k, has 370k on it now, FWIW

You can fix any car to last your lifetime and it’s cheaper than buying new just because you “feel” like you need a new one.

Thinking of getting a used truck. Is there room for negotiating with Carmax?
