I'd be less concerned about mileage and more concerned about safety.

Size matters. The heaviest car often wins the match in an accident.

Just bought my daughter a 2013 Avalon. It's huge by today's standards and very nice. Hauls arse too.

Best crash rating you can afford.

Nothing else matters.

First off, your daughter is a female I am assuming so dropping 15k+ on a newer car she is probably going to do something to is not the best investment. I'd look at early to mid 2000's.

Secondly, I'd also recommend a rav 4 or something crossoverish. No Jeep

You can put 180-200K on one of these. If you buy her one with 40K on it she can drive it through high school.

Get her a Honda or Toyota.

/thread

If she's fat, then I think by law you will have to buy her a base model mustang.

Depends on your budget and how long she'll drive it. Accords and Camrys hold their value, but cost more initially. A Ford Fusion would be also be a nice car. I'd look for something she could drive throughout high school and college. I'd look for a 2007-2010 model with 75-100k miles. A Volvo would be more expensive, but they have great safety ratings.

New drivers wreck cars. I am going with a truck or something from the late 60's- early 70's. I may add extra steel around the driver's cage.

Paying for a little extra gas now to insure against a lifelong limp seems cheap.

The manual transmission idea is a good one. I cringe knowing that no matter how much I educate, remind and reinforce my girls on never to text and drive, they are going to step into a vehicle and one of their friend's will text and drive.

I just hope they are strong enough to speak up against it.

Would you support your child if she was riding in a vehicle with a texting driver if she grabbed the phone, threw it out of the window, and told the driver she was just fighting crime and keeping them both safe?

I may laugh for years if that actually happened.

My daughter's first car was an '01 Jeep Wrangler Sahara. High resale value on jeeps. She came out of this unscathed. There's no way I'd put my kid in something small to save money on gas. Paid 10k, got 14500 from insurance.

Maybe. But there are tons that are. If so, take it to dealership to have fixed.
