I used to think Hokas were some of the ugliest shoes around. Then I started having some pain in my feet after an increase in my daily step count. Did some research. Tried a pair of Hokas. Loved them so much, I bought a second pair one month later. I still think they don’t look great, but I don’t care anymore.

I’ve run/walked in Brooks for 15 years. Currently in Ghost 15 but they need replacing. I used to be a Nike Pegasus guy when I ran cross country in college. I loved the zero drop Brooks Pure Flow but they discontinued it. Probably going to try the Brooks Glycerin next.

How many miles, months, etc. before replacing a pair of walking/running shoes?

990s are not running shoes but good for walking? Maybe?

I'm a big fan of Altra and Xero for the wide toe box and minimal heel-toe drop.
That said, if feet are hurting simply walking neighborhood it might be a gait, weight, or conditioning issue more than shoe fit. What are you wearing To walk now? If it has a drastic heel-toe drop I'd start there. Wider toe box may help too as feet cant function as well for balance and support when overly confined. But unless your current shoes are just a really poor fit for you, I imagine it's likely going to take time to recondition your legs and feet to better support yourself.

Varsity Sports,
That's the one that's close to campus? If so, this would be the correct answer.

Nike Vomero 18, this is seriously the most comfortable walking/running shoe that I have ever owned.

Mizuno or Brooks have been great over the years.

Another vote for Brooks

I second this or the Pegasus, very comfortable shoes. The Pegasus doesn’t look as much like an orthopedic shoe like Hokas do.

I tried many “foamy” types from different brands and never got good support

49 years old and just bought these Ghost 17 Brooks. One of the most comfortable shoes Ive ever owned

I would just default to any major flagship max cushion trainer. They're all pretty good. Buy a generation or two older on sale if you're just walking and don't care.
Glycerin or the regular Vomeros will look less like moon shoes vs. the Glycerin Max, Hokas, etc. I run in high stack stuff but I usually don't wear them casually.

Ditto. Altra Superior or Lone Peak. Do not get built up cushiony shoes. You need to strengthen your feet.
