still pick up the tab at dinner a lot of times. Again, not because I can't pay for my own food, but because they like sharing and spending time with their kids.

I'm 38, and you can bet your arse this is never going to happen, no matter how much money they have. They are my parents, and I respect them, and I'm going to pick up the tab every time because they shouldn't have to pay for anything to spend time with me.

I'm 35 and I'm pretty sure my Dad would kick me in the nuts if I tried to pay for dinner when we all go together

I pick up tabs like that for my parents or in laws. They pay some, I pay some. I do the same with our siblings and close friends.

So you refuse even when your dad insists on picking up the tab at times?

I never got an allowance as a kid

Then again, I didn't have chores beyond keeping my own room clean so I guess that was the trade off.

yeah... I can’t imagine paying for my dad unless it’s his birthday or Father’s Day

He would not like it at all

Mine either. He doesn't even like when we buy him a Christmas gift. He hates when we (my brother and I) waste money.

This is more about enabling parents tbh.

can't tell you how many times I've invited my parents out to eat, try to pay, only for them to adamantly refuse to let me pay. I've learned to give the server my CC before the meal is over.

Same. It's just a ridiculous "brag" to say that you are superior because you don't have a good enough relationship and your parents are responsible enough to treat you to dinner every now and then. And then sometimes I'll pick it up to show I appreciate them when they were expecting to pay.

It's really not that complicated

So for an entire generation spanning 15 years, they "asked" 1,000 people? That's a disqualifying sample size. You can't even call that research.

I do this as well.

I work with an aunt who isn't that much older than me, and we go to lunch together a few times a week and usually trade-off paying by seeing who can get the bill paid before the other notices.

Don’t hate the player, hate the game.

Both sides of my family pay for our vacations each year. They are all boomers and know that the only way I will hang out with their selfish asses is if they pay.
