In Portland they're just like I said, spaced out, sort of like Pod People. Not really mean or anything, just not "awake"
They are perpetually stoned like many here in Asheville. I get what you are saying. People with zoned out personalities. Most not from the South. But people in Asheville are generally extremely nice and easygoing.

What was weird to me was the total lack of "excitement" any where.
I was there over Memorial Day weekend, and out side of the drum circle (
) and one party bus, no one seemed to get over 50 decibels.
Just oddly subdued every where.

I haven't really seen that as much as I hear people say. I mean, if I see a guy with plaid hair, a bone through his nose, and those earlobe stretching hoop earrings in, I'm probably don't have anything in common with the guy. I mean, I might try to see if I can throw a piece of popcorn through his earring without him noticing, but that's probably as far as our interpersonal relationship would go.
But when I'm downtown, I usually stop by a taproom or brewery, and I always meet friendly people at craft beer places.

This is just a general statement. But the word "craft" in front of beer is becoming my male version of "moist/moisten."

People take their craft beer seriously here.

In my limited experience of a lot of travel last 18 months. These places are becoming bigger, and have potential for more growth:
Aside from Bunkie:
Denver
DC
SLC
Although I agree about SLC, there's limited places to grow at this point. The valley is getting eaten up (and it seems to have grown a ton in only the last year and a half I've been here). St. George down south is apparently one of the fastest growing places in the country though. It isn't Urban....yet. But it's more temperate, has even better access to National Parks, and some cool traditions. I could see it as an Austin in 5-10 years, but it needs a University or a few big companies to push faster growth.
If we're talking SLC....I think Park City's also going to start absorbing a ton of the growth. They have room to grow up there and I've considered it if I stay around here. But SLC is a great place all together. Love the area. The only minus is limited large water access.
I'd add Madison, WI for a semi-small town that's on the up and up. Lots of Potential there.
Denver, Atlanta, DC, Houston, those have been on lists like this for years, and there's no stopping them really, specifically Atlanta and Houston.

Jax, what about Jacksonville? I have heard a couple of good things about it but never see it listed. I'm assuming you live or have lived there.

Jacksonville has been trending up for a long time, but I haven't lived there for the last 3 years. I love Jacksonville. It's the most "normal" city in Florida. Lot's of great areas in the city and lots to do within a couple of hours drive.

Jacksonville is actually probably number 1 in cities I just didn't like at all.
It just seemed like one, giant, strip mall.
The location gives it a lot to work with, so that disappointed me.

Got a cousin who lives there. He's a city manager for one of the towns in that area.

All of Florida is growing. No income tax does wonders for a state.

Relatively inexpensive, warm and no income tax. Unfortunately it also attracts a lot of questionable folks.

What do you mean questionable?

The ones that make the daily "From Florida" highlight reel for strange behavior while on bath salts.

Ya, a lot of people who want to escape their shite life somewhere else in the country mentions Florida as their destination so this is not surprising.
