While much of this change is empowering, some young investors may require some future retirement guidance, as 1 out of 5 who quit opted to cash out of their 401(k), a move that could potentially have a longer-term negative impact, the Fidelity study notes.
“The fact that so many people who left their jobs as a result of the Great Resignation also cashed out of their 401(k)s may be cause for concern,” Rita Assaf, vice president of Retirement at Fidelity Investments, said in the study. “Taking money out of your retirement accounts completely should be avoided unless the immediate need is critical and there are no other options, not only because of the tax implications, but also due to the impact on your retirement nest egg. If possible, one of the most important things you can do to prepare yourself for retirement is to start saving as early as possible, since you have time and the power of compound interest potentially on your side.”

think a lot of theses jobs used to be done by teenagers as it was expected even in more well off families and I think the high schoolers from middle class and upper families are no longer working as much, instead doing other extracurriculars to get to college.
I actually think you’re on to something here. My son is 16 this summer, but will be so busy doing extra curricular stuff he may not be able to work (gotta expand that college resume , since he’s in a socioeconomic class where grades alone won’t do it anymore….)

The only guess I got was baby boomers retired all at once due to the virus, and this mass exodus out of the workforce caused shortages.
I think this is a big part of it.

My wife and I talk about this often, wondering the same thing. I personally know one organization unable to staff enough mental health therapists. There also seems to be a shortage of health care personnel such as nurses and techs. School districts across the country are temporarily closing or not running bus routes to pick up students because of staffing issues.

The dentist I called last week doesn’t have an assistant or receptionist - his dad or brother is answering the phones
Are they doing it for free? If so, I am sure he is in no hurry to hire someone..

No, but does a 20 year old work at McDonald’s when a bunch of companies will hire him for a career type job? That 20 year old didn’t have those opportunities 5 years ago.

I didn’t get the whole story - was just trying to make an appointment for one of the kids
I hope the dentist hires someone soon bc I was supposed to get a call back to make the appointment and never did
