I get WFH job interview requests like never before over the past year. We've actually had to offer WFH to remain competitive for candidates
I just took a WFH job at a 20% increase over previous salary. I spent the last year trying to convince my previous employer that companies who figure out how to employ a remote workforce will have a significant competitive advantage these days- will recruit and retain better talent, and save a ton of money on overhead…..

Most of us go in 1 day per week but otherwise my department is WFH. We've had people tell us they'd take 10-15k less to WFH

No, but does a 20 year old work at McDonald’s when a bunch of companies will hire him for a career type job? That 20 year old didn’t have those opportunities 5 years ago.
Not sure about that - most 20 year olds that fit the McDonalds qualifications aren’t necessarily ready or able for a career type job, not saying it’s a bad thing - I just don’t think that is what’s happening

im sure they can find workers if they were willing to pay them.
Willing and ability to pay are two diff things.
If you are a franchise, mc Donald’s corporate isn’t paying your payroll. You are from the sales of your store. You also have to buy the product to sell that now costs more. So higher cost of goods and higher labor means higher menu prices.

At McDonald’s?
This is pretty funny.. Because all of the places that have trouble finding workers are service industry jobs..
But seriously, I don't think the pandemic caused a problem, I think it just caused something that was steadily becoming a problem to happen faster and all at once.
One thing I noticed.. And I could be wrong, but there are not as many teenagers working these jobs after school or on the weekends.
When I was in HS (saying that makes me sound like a old man)everyone either worked at a fast food joint, a grocery store or some type of job. It just seems like there are less HS students who get jobs than in the past and when shite was shut down, a lot of people who worked those type of jobs found other ways to make their scratch.

Yep. Our CFO tried to order sweeping return to office orders for everyone under him. Lost two experienced IT dudes immediately. They quickly compromised and we get hybrid 3/2 every week now.

Businesses are not paying enough. There are other opportunities out there. My side gig while I am finishing up my return to college made me $70+/hr over 17 hours of work this weekend.
Businesses don't need to pay $70 hr for labor but they are not going to get someone with a head on their shoulders for $15/hr and no benefits.
Employers have had the upper hand for such a long time that they no longer know how to recruit, value, and retain employees. Employees are literally walking into a lobby with infinite doors when they look for a job. They might also do like me, work a few weeks then take a couple months off... I know plenty taking contracts making 3X what they would with a staff job. What they do is work 1/3 of the time they normally would and make the same living. That is living life. I have a feeling the 5 day/40 hr week is coming to an end sooner than later.

That isn't getting people in the door today. They need to pay better.

Because you are -
My brother and I worked in high school, too, at jobs that were within walking distance (or a bike ride) from our house
My teens do not work - there’s nothing close to us where they could work - the places that did say they were hiring said they were too young - and with vehicle prices - they are not getting a car just to go to a minimum wage job. And the place where my husband works -that does hire teens - won’t hire relatives of current employees

This is a big part- the economy has been definitely changing and the pandemic accelerated it to the gig/WFH sphere. It is not necessarily a bad thing, but like all big changes, it is going to cause pain somewhere.
The population decline/stagnation is a part as well- why do you think abortion is being so heavily targeted? It is not because of the religious zealots- they were always there. It is because management realizes a smaller workforce means more compromise for them and less profits due to unfettered exploitation of worker capital. However, the future economies will almost certainly need less unskilled labor. Those pushing continued population gain just don't care- the excess will simply be weeded out when necessary. It also doesn't concern them that less overall human population is better for the natural resource management as well, not when all the uber wealthy care about is controlling even more wealth.
