$400 per valve to install on my irrigation system. Just the valve, rest of the system in place. To be fair to the sprinkler guy, he knew his company was insane on that price and prefaced the quote by telling me to do it myself.
It’s just nuts, $20 part and maybe 5 minutes of labor.

I had a contractor quote me 10k to do $500 worth of drywall repair after hurricane harvey. Just drywall, no paint, tape and float, baseboards or floors. He asked me "what do you think?" after he gave me that bullshite and I told him "I think you should leave".

Lots of work to that. Might need a bigger footing than what is already there. Lots of labor for all the cuts. If if they planned on doing it right that price does not seem way out of line. Especially if they're including the materials.

I've given an outrageous quote and gotten an outrageous quote.
Gotten- my son's iPhone 11 bricked when the software updated. Went to Apple store in Atlanta to see what options were. Store tech said he really couldn't do anything and gave me a number to a company specializing in data recovery. Called them while in the store and they quoted me about $2500 to recover and backup all the data from his phone. Hard pass; I went and upgraded my phone and he got my old one.
Given- I worked at a private country club during the Atlanta Olympics. We were closed on Tuesdays. My boss told me to come in on Tuesday, open the cart barn and get out 4 carts. Come back 5 hours later and clean/put up the carts and there'd be an envelope waiting for me. I do the first part and get a call at my apartment 2 hours later saying they were done and to head back to the club. I get back and there's $500 in an envelope for me.
Turns out it was the family of the Sultan of Brunei; one of our members had gotten hired to chauffeur them around during the Olympics. Someone in the neighborhood shot off fireworks and scared them off. They wanted to came back and finish their round. We offered to block off a couple of hours around them to play in relative anonymity. They wanted the course to themselves. We said that would be $500,000. They passed.

Received an Out the door quote yesterday from a dealership in Florida. Haggled with him and he returned the quote with it being $600 more overall than I had before. I’m not that bad of a haggler lol. Was ready to spend the money and fly there until that happened.

Water heater went out. Couldn’t get the pilot lit. Called the guy, wanted to replace the whole water heater. Told him nope. Not sure what he quoted but I bought the pilot assemble and change it. All good for a year so far.

quote:
$30,000 to get a tree cut down
Holy shite. No way I could have held back from laughing in that guy's face.

An indoor/outdoor rated Wyze camera is $20, and you can either do your own "monitoring" or pay them a couple bucks a month to do it. They are powered by microUSB, so you can get power to/from wherever pretty easily. They record to a microSD card, or if you're technically-inclined and okay with a little jank, you can get it to record to a DVR/NVR. If you want to step up to a prosumer product, Ubiquiti cameras start under $100 and go up, but have a lot of features.
$1000 to install two cameras is robbery.

In the early 90s a friend told me that Collective Soul would be this generation's Rolling Stones. For some reason that has stuck with me. No, I did not keep a straight face.
Oh, wrong kind of quote.

$16,800 to REPLACE a single tankless water heater. Yes, the new device was nice, high volume, and retails for about $2600 but we already had all the gas and water pipes in place and all they had to do was pull the old one off and slap the new one on. My handyman and I can do that.
Hell, i can take a week off work, learn plumbing code, pipe welding etc on youtube and save the $14k. i do not make $14k a week.

A new company had bought out a tire place I sometimes when to for tires and oil changes. All new management. I took a 20-year-old Camry (very low mileage) in for an oil change and the new manager presented me with a list of critical items that I needed to fix right away and an estimate. The estimate was more than the car -- which is a very good car in great shape -- was worth. I chuckled, and said "thanks, I'll show this to my mechanic."
My mechanic and I chuckled over it later and I have never gone back to that place.

Long time ago, 2 dancers came up to me and we started talking. Then my friend joined the conversation and 5 minutes later these 2 ladies were dancing with each other and putting a hell of a show. We were just staring in astonishment. 3 songs later they said we owe them $300 for the dance. We told them that they never asked if we wanted a dance so we told them, sorry, no. They got pissed and called security. A big guy came up and grabbed us by the shirt and we got kicked out.
We saved $300.
A month later we were at the same place having fun and nobody cared.
