You can't judge someone by their actions. And then judge yourself by your intentions.

Commandancy of the Alamo
Bejar, Feby. 24, 1836
To the People of Texas & All Americans in the World

Fellow citizens & compatriots

I am besieged, by a thousand or more of the Mexicans under Santa Anna I have sustained a continual Bombardment & cannonade for 24 hours & have not lost a man The enemy has demanded a surrender at discretion, otherwise, the garrison are to be put to the sword, if the fort is taken I have answered the demand with a cannon shot, & our flag still waves proudly from the walls I shall never surrender or retreat. Then, I call on you in the name of Liberty, of patriotism & everything dear to the American character, to come to our aid, with all dispatch The enemy is receiving reinforcements daily & will no doubt increase to three or four thousand in four or five days. If this call is neglected, I am determined to sustain myself as long as possible & die like a soldier who never forgets what is due to his own honor & that of his country VICTORY OR DEATH.

I've fricked in England and I've fricked in France.
I've fricked by choice and I've fricked by chance.
But I will not be happy and I will not be free,
Until I frick Edwin Edwards like that bastard fricked me.

In three words I can sum up everything I've learned about life: it goes on.

"It is i defeat that turns bone to flint; it is defeat that turn gristle into muscle; it is defeat that make men invincible. Do not, then, be afraid of defeat. You are never so near victory as when defeated in a good cause."
-Henry Ward Beecher

I like that quote a lot. It reminds me that failing is okay. You learn from your failings and get a bit tougher and wiser with each failure. And eventually, you will reach victory.

There was a desert wind blowing that night. It was one of those hot dry Santa Anas that come down through the mountain passes and curl your hair and make your nerves jump and your skin itch. On nights like that every booze party ends in a fight. Meek little wives feel the edge of the carving knife and study their husbands' necks. Anything can happen.

My dad told me once when I was about 7 years old while he was holding his thumb and first finger about 2 inches apart. He said "boy, don't ever forget that this is 7 inches". I understood what it meant a little later in life. He knew I had a short fat pecker.
