I had a three year old Honda Accord that I had payed off...traded it in, they gave me 5k and I leased an Infiniti...
After 38 months, I was still upside down and had to turn it in and buy a new car with nothing down.
I was pretty young and stupid. I could’ve gone 6-7 years without a car note but instead it took me 5 years to get back to that point.

Mine, not investing 10k in bitcoin when it first came out

My parents...not putting 80k in Qualcomm in the early 90’s and selling a 3B 2BA beachfront condo in Destin for $40k in the late 80’s because we only went a couple weekends a year and VRBO wasn’t a thing back then

Thankfully we’re pretty good with money, so I’d say my worst financial mistake was buying Finet.com (FNCM) - a “cutting edge online mortgage company.” This company was “going to change how we shop for mortgages.”

We got cocky as students - yes I got married as an undergrad - and purchased $3,000 worth of AOL stock and watched it double in about two months time. I thought, hey, this is easy. Along came FNCM where I could purchase $6,000 worth of a much cheaper stock. So what did I do? I backed up the truck and loaded up.

We ended up purchasing at its all time high and rode that dog all the way down to about a $300 liquidated amount. It tanked our entire fledgling savings account. We learned some very valuable lessons from that experience and I don’t regret the experience due to the lessons learned, but it was a tough pill to swallow as poor students.

I owned 4,000 shares of Tupperware (TUP) I purchased around $3.50. Sold it around $5.50. I looked at it the other day and it is at $33.

Pretty stupid, I don’t remember why I sold it eother

Not mine but know a guy who sold 50 acres in Desoto parish for $1500 an acre a year before Haynesviile Shale took off. He gave the mineral rights away with the sale.

The person he sold it too made over 500K in lease and gas royalties.

Spending $60,000 on a fence and swimming pool. Told my wife that a cheaper option would be to take the kids to Hawaii every summer until they graduated, but no....was convinced they would live in the pool and we wouldn’t have to worry about them running the roads. After about the second year I was begging someone to use the pool. Of course if I ever got bored or my wallet got too heavy, there was always something that needed to be repaired or replaced associated with the pool.

I probably spent $15,000 over 7 years of having a pool. Had to replace coping and tile, two pumps, salt cell, control panel, polaris, drained it and acid washed twice after filling with mud and hurricane debris, etc. over the years. Doing the math, that comes to $75,000. We could have easily gone to Hawaii every year.

Going into business with a friend and his wife. Damn near lost everything I have due to them stealing money from the business.
