How about a brother or sister? Babies are good pets, kinda.

You feed a Betta fish two times a day? Dafuq? Those things can go like a week without eating.

I enjoyed keeping a betta, but they really need warmish water to thrive. They don't do well if you let your house get cold in the winter, as I started doing, as low as 66F, and I didn't want to keep a heated tank.

Seems like any animal requiring feeding less than about daily and lives in a cage would be boring as frick and a good likelihood a kid would over feed it.
I’d go for something like a spider or lizard. Maybe a lizard he can hold. That you can feed like crickets or something so he gets to show everyone that comes over how it eats.

Already mentioned but corn snake is a great pet for a kid. Only feed once a week and kid can be creative with setup.

Got my 5-year old a bearded dragon for Christmas. He loves it and it’s super easy. Drop some veggies in his bowl and a handful of crickets or mealworms or most recently discovered dubia roaches. See my thread on the outdoor board. He sits on my shoulder while I work.

Get her a dog. Maybe your kid will turn it into the next Lassie. Hell, Timmy was about 7 when he got Lassie.
You know, Lassie put a lot of pressure on dogs. I remember one time Grampa had heart attack driving down the road. Lassie jumped out of the back, took the wheel and drove gramps to the hospital. Bitch made 2 right turns, too.
Remember the opening music and credits? The whistling? That was frickin' Lassie! Bitch put a lot of pressure on dogs.
And what happened to he Dobberman? That K-9 is out of work. Remember when that was the guard dog of choice? Now, it's been put out of work to Rotweiler and Pitbull. Yesterday, I saw a Dobbie on corner with a "I'll will work for food" sign.
Speaking of which, they should make homeless people pets. You know, we see a homeless guy on the sidewalk and everyone heckles him to get a job. Always yelling at them to not clean our windshields. But when anyone sees a stray dog or cat on the side of the road, they get all emotional.
That's why I think they should make homeless people into pets. Imagine, you could own a REAL German Shepherd.
Do they do comedy here?

Get him a dog that is manageable for the size of your home and property. They will develop a bond and memories that will last a lifetime.

Get a dog just be ready for majority of the big stuff to be done by you and your wife. The kid can feed it, and help with bathing it. But, as always there’s a lot to it. Puppies take sooooooo damn long to chill out, and depending on breed it could be a few years. Either go find the most chill house trained one, or do big time research on what’s best for yalls situation. The biggest thing I would suggest is meet the breeders, and bring your kid/kids. They’ll try to match one with the best personality for your family, and don’t get it to soon. Let it spend the correct amount of time with its parents this will help with discipline.
