My favorite Babe quote:
When he held out for the $80,000 in the depression year of 1930, his sports-writing friends advised him to take it easy because, after all, he’d be making more money than the President of the United States, Herbert Hoover.
“What’s Hoover got to do with it?” he growled and then thoughtfully added, “Besides, I had a better year than he did anyway.”

Babe Ruth isn’t even the most legendary baseball player. Ted Williams missed three MLB seasons to serve in the US armed forces. He was the last player to hit .400. Ruth’s best year was in 1921 at .378. Teddy Ballgame was the best to ever do it.

I can't believe this guy actually existed. He seems more like some literary contrivance.

Do any of these other beaches have a candy bar named after them?

Every player mentioned thus far are losers, all in the shadow of the great Joe Charboneau.

Do you Ben Franklin bro
Ben's not really well known.
100 dollar bills are known as "Benjamin's". Yet, US currency is known as "Dead Presidents". People don't even realize Ben Franklin was not a president!
He's not all that well known.
Sadly.

In no order:
Babe Ruth
Elvis
George Washington
Big Dick Joe

I think after George Washington, Babe Ruth is the second most revered American hero.
Lol no
George Washington
Abe Lincoln
MLK
Ike
Reagan
All fundamentally changed the way in which we live and individually made the country a better place. Without babe Ruth, we’d have one fewer candy bar on the shelves. I can’t remember the last time I actually thought of babe Ruth for any reason.
All time great American sportsman, yes. American hero, no.

The candy bar was named after President Grover Cleveland's daughter, Ruth Cleveland.

Japanese soldiers would yell out "Babe Ruth" in the dark to troll American servicemen in foxholes 15-20 years after his prime. Larger than life figure imo.

Babe Ruth was really the first famous person in American history

I think Mantle is the most talented person to ever lace his spikes up. What would’ve been had he not torn up his knees.
If he applied himself also

Ruth was great no doubt. What separates him though in Americana folklore imo is that he was the FIRST true American sports superstar.

Outside of sports I’d say Andrew Jackson was the first true famous person that was organically elevated by the American public.
The founding fathers were already well entrenched members of elite society that were either born in Britain or came from elite British colonial families.

It took Hank 3000 more at bats.
Babe Ruth also had the luxury of only playing against white players.
and that's not a knock at white players, just saying.

Great post. Screw Barry Bonds. Hell, I had forgot about him till you posted the picture. The Babe is larger than life in Americana.
