I remember this day when I was a kid. Had no idea what my dad was doing but knew not to touch any of it. Eventually let me play Doom on it.

Looking back I’m shocked my parents bought us one. Most of the time it was used by me to play Hardball and bash homers with Hank Contos and Willie Barnes (I’ll never forget their names). I logged stats in a notebook

University of Alabama had a deal with IBM in the 80s where students could buy a PC for about $2500.
Which coincidentally was about double the out of state tuition for a semester. And quadruple the instate tuition.

My father bought our company its first computer in January 1984 for about $15,000. It replaced an NCR punch card machine that was around $22k.
I was finishing high school but I remember it.
He later bought an additional 10mb hard drive for another $5k.

my friend talked his dad into buying an IBM after we went to 'computer camp' in the summer of 1983.
it was a cool 10 grand and came with a green IBM monitor and okidata dot matrix printer and i forget how much extra he paid for Wordstar.
i used that to do my senior term paper.

Thanks to those who shared but ample advertisements from that era show you how much people were willing to pay for what is today, crap.

We have a similar one of these laptops on display at work. It weighs about 25 pounds and that is without the external battery and plugs.

Gateway Computer. 1997.
Dad got it and unboxed it on a Saturday. Threw me the Encarta CD.
He loaded up America Online- must of been a free disk.
Went in a good ole chatroom for the first time.
Family all gathered around at about 9AM.
Nudes. Straight up tittays in front of the entire family.
Welcome to the internet.

Those late 90s chat rooms were something else. Yahoo checkers rooms was where I kicked back at.
