Because they love the training. They really, really love rolling around on the floor playing grab-arse with another grown man for funsies.

That's good to hear, I've heard it was good for women or smaller people and gives an advantage. I guess it can work good if a person came at you swinging punches also, do ya'll get taught how to avoid punches? I realize BJJ doesn't do striking much, but does it teach to avoid a strike? So if you were in a parking lot or alone and an untrained and unarmed guy attacked you, he'd more than likely be in for a rude awakening or get more than he bargained for, possibly, good to hear and see about women and young folks getting in this kind of stuff.

You say this, but acting legitimately, certifiably crazy is a great way to keep people from fricking with you. I know a guy who spent five and a half years in prison talking to his "pet bird" on his shoulder. Not the first hard arse messed with him.

He got out and never saw or talked to the bird again. He's just a regular dude now.

Well it would work for adults b/c we've seen enough crazy in our lives to be like wtf and leave. High schoolers would just beat the shite out of somebody doing that.

Maybe BJJ is decent for 1 on 1, but no way for multiple people. Still seems boxing would be better 1 on 1.

BJJ is superior in 1v1, in a group situation it’s obviously not ideal.

Yep, but when will you ever be in a group fight.

It does a number of thing from slowing the fight down and leveling the field with skill/strength/athletic ability.

I've done or studied quite a few combat systems and all are debatable as "the best". However, none can train the normal dude for a streetfight like live rolling BJJ. The psychological impact of a 230lb bear on top of you trying to put you to sleep in a controlled environment goes along way when facing a drunken moron at the bar at 1am.

To be fair, the bird was serving a longer sentence for piracy.

Probably one of the most important aspects of any training is just don't tell everyone that you come across that you're "BJJ expert", or that you're proficient in any of those skills. That just draws unwanted attention and often leads to unnecessary conflict. Just train, become proficient, keep up your skills, and use them if need be.

I once knew a big Marine. He loved to talk loud and tell everyone how tough he was and how he could fight and win against anyone. He got wound up one night with a real attitude. Some little wiry redneck feller who weighed maybe 160 pounds had drawn his attention. That little feller beat the living shite out of that Marine and had him unconscious in under 20 seconds.

One important lesson in life that is often learned too late, or never learned at all, is that you should never, ever talk yourself into an arse whipping.

I'd rather take muay thai. Who wants to be rolling on the street ground with a random stranger? Throw a couple of legit leg kicks and they'll get the message.

In all honesty the best self-defense is to be an Olympic level sprinter and just dip when things go south.

I'd think an Olympic level shooter can probably take care of things

Anybody can punch. BJJ teaches leverage and positioning. If you can get into the right position, you can throw a hard punch if you aren't a bitch.

Boxing teaches the positioning and head movement too, but you have no experience once it gets to the ground.

Train Krav Maga and train the important aspects of all of them, plus armed conflict training, how to gain an advantage against an armed person when you aren't armed, etc.

I asked my cousin and he said Japanese Jujitsu is superior to all.

Resumé:
Semifinalist in junior Olympic trials for Judo
HS state champion wrestler
BJJ world champion
Son of an 8th degree black belt in Minami Ryu Jujitsu.

Had an old WWII vet (boxer) tell me that if a wrestler and a boxer get into a fight, always bet ont he wrestler to win.

It's up there, I prefer Muay Thai though. I feel more comfortable standing and striking. I just don't like rolling around with motherfrickers lol

If you aren't doing BJJ, do judo.

Every drunk guy wants to charge first and get inside to put hands on you.

Plus you can nullify the size difference.

Wrestlers in the 70s and 80s..if a guy from the audience jumped in the ring, they'd rip his pants down as a way to usually null the situation.

Apparently your attitude changes quickly if all of a sudden you have 5000-10,000 people staring at your wang
