We play that card game sometimes at family gatherings. Similar to Go Fish.

And I always thought "making groceries" was a Cajun phrase that New Orleans appropriated?

It is strictly and exclusively an old school New Orleans phrase. You won't hear it anywhere else. It's a phrase that has really died out and an older generation thing. It's pretty much just said as a joke now.

This.

I still say it at times. More so when I go hunting or fishing. And yes, I do.

My grandparents used this all the time, back in the 60's and 70's. Not nearly as awful as saying "my bad"

Redpop4, this is the correct answer.
quote:

As I understand it, the French for grocery shopping involves the verb for "to make/to do" which is fare in Italian, and hacer in Spanish. Whatever it is in French, it likely to be part of the colloquial phrase in said language.

quote:

The expression derives from the French faire son marché, “to do one’s market shopping," faire translating either "to do" or "to make."

Why do northerners call a coke a "pop"?
Why do Brits call the bathroom a water closet or loo?

I've heard people say it from time to time growing up. I'll say it every now and then out of fun. I've never actually hated on anyone or thought they were stupid for saying it though.
