Tipping threads on the OT are an easy way to spot the ignorant rednecks. Always entertaining

This. I hate when I'm out to eat with people on a Friday/ Saturday night or Sunday brunch and they bitch about lack of service. If you want your server to sit there and carry on a conversation while filling your glass of water 8 times, go out on Tuesday night

You want to be paid better? Acquiring skills that can't be taught in an hour to some random Joe is a good start.

What are you talking about? Restaurant staffs aren't full of hs drop outs. Some are in hs and arent really in position to work full time because the law doesn't allow it. So their options are limited. Then you have your college students who could be a great worker and is just buying time til they graduate.

It's not like every restaurant is full of Popeye's workers.

If I had to pay waiters a "living" wage, I would then pass the buck right back onto the consumer via menu prices. At least with gratuity, you can choose if a waiter deserves a low or high commission.

"Studies have shown that tipping is not an effective incentive for performance in servers. It also creates an environment in which people of color, young people, old people, women, and foreigners tend to get worse service than white males. In a tip-based system, nonwhite servers make less than their white peers for equal work." Slate article.

quote:

When wealthy Americans brought home the practice of tipping from their European vacations in the late 19th century, their countrymen considered it bribery. State legislatures quickly banned the practice. But restaurateurs, giddy at the prospect of passing labor costs directly to customers, eventually convinced Americans to accept tipping. We had it right the first time.

Tipping does not incentivize hard work. The factors that correlate most strongly to tip size have virtually nothing to do with the quality of service. Credit card tips are larger than cash tips. Large parties with sizable bills leave disproportionately small tips. We tip servers more if they tell us their names, touch us on the arm, or draw smiley faces on our checks. Quality of service has a laughably small impact on tip size. According to a 2000 study, a customer’s assessment of the server’s work only accounts for between 1 and 5 percent of the variation in tips at a restaurant.

It also encourages worse service by motivating waiters to upsell you rather than give honest recommendations about food or wine.

And it makes me pay more for food than you do. I leave an extra big tip because I know there is some cheap a-hole (like my in-laws) in the room who will leave 20 cents. The current system punishes decent people and rewards jerks with discounts.
