The willing suspension of disbelief is the foundation the Oscars is built on. There's not much reason to believe it wouldn't figure pretty heavily into tonight's events as well.

Three things stick out to me as to why this shite was staged.
Wills initial reaction to the joke (he laughs, but only gets “offended” when Jada turns to him)
The lack of flinching from Rock when the slap was coming.
Also, Smith’s stance while slapping. That shite looked like something out of a fake Hollywood acting class. He shifts his weight and follows through all the way.
No one slaps like that. And if Smith is really a man “standing up for his lady,” he punches. Or takes the high road and blasts Rock on Twitter later in the evening.

Amazed that so many lunatics here think it was fake.
I could understand if you only saw the slap itself… but if you only took just a couple minutes to watch the footage that’s literally EVERYWHERE on that device youre typing on, you’d see Will’s screaming after the fact about his wife was legit.. Rock’s stunned reaction was legit.. Denzel and Tyler Perry comforting Will during the commercial and Smith wiping away tears.. i realize he’s a good actor but he ain’t THAT good .
