Ratings for the Oscars have been abysmal since Covid started. Not saying its 100% fake, but ratings, clicks, and views would be them gaining something.

So Will Smith assaulting someone at the end of a show no one cares about is going to benefit which of the people staging it? Barely anyone even knew about it until this morning.
The Oscars were so desperate for ratings and publicity, they set this up. That was the argument last night.
Today the argument is that Smith went rogue to repair his public image.
Both theories appear like a stretch.

Rubes on this board think Smith defended the honor of a woman he's in an open relationship with, and has said she preferred someone else.
I don’t think we’re actually saying that. We’re saying he did it to protect his own ego, which as deranged as Will Smith is he thought assaulting Chris Rock on stage would do that.

Damn. 58 pages from a lot of 6’4” men who don’t care about the Oscars.

Even simpletons would be able to see the wide opportunity for this being a PR stunt.
He waits to do this right before getting the Oscar? I know Smith is too narcissistic and stupid to think this through, but he could have been thrown the frick out of the Oscars for it, and then his wife (if she remained behind) would have to accept the Oscar on his behalf. How fricking embarrassing would that be when he was in the auditorium a mere 30 minutes before?

Its mainly just turned into an argument between people who think its real and those that think its fake.

It's weird how many people came out the woodwork to defend Will Smith for being a dumbass, either way
But Chris Rock is not a dumbass and wouldn’t go along with this. You have to be a fool to think he would, and if the Academy is so concerned about the ratings, everyone knows you simply need to hire Ricky Gervais to fix that.

Why should anyone care if it was staged? Why should this be of interest beyond one day?

Right?
Like I said before, I could understand if he hadn't made a movie in awhile and was totally irrelevant. He's not. He was literally up for (and had a good shot at winning) his first Oscar. And in a movie that portrays a strong, Black father of two world famous Black women.
Him winning that Oscar alone was going to be the softball of publicity in today's media with everyone that was tied to it. There were just waiting to salivate over that. He didn't need the publicity and certainly not bad publicity.

Oh, Will Smith and Rock are good buds, who and they've been the butt of jokes before.

“Jada said she’s not coming, protest. I was like, ‘Isn’t she on a TV show?’ Jada’s going to boycott the Oscars? Jada boycotting the Oscars is like me boycotting Rihanna’s panties. I wasn’t invited!”
Judging from the pic, this looks to be late 90s to early 2000s. Their hatred didn’t start until the mid-2000s. Plus that just looks like they’re backstage at some sort of conference and just ran into each other, not hanging with one another at say a bar. It’s like me posting the photo with Howard Stern with OJ at Trump’s second wedding and saying they’re friends.

There’s way more evidence that 911 was inside job than this

This isn't about the Oscars though. It's about an A-list celebrity bitch slap.
But if you want to fill us in on Wanda Sykes and Miss Piggy as hosts, or red carpet fashion, go right ahead.

Are we really doing this now? This is why this defending Smith is so weird to me.
Because comedians (the good ones at least which Rock is) tend to be very smart while actors tend to be stupid. Will Smith is by no means a comedian and is merely a charming performer on stage. Will is not funny on his own accord while Rock is.
quote:
Will hamming it up and belly laughing at Rock's jokes seem to suggest otherwise. Link?
When Anthony Jeselnik roasted Steve-O to tell him to not give up on his suicide, do you think he was laughing because he found that funny? No, it was a self defense mechanism. I love how y’all think Will Smith is so talented that he can fake an assault but not a laugh, which literally anyone can do.

He wouldn’t do this on the night of his likely first Oscar. This isn’t the MTV Music Awards, it’s a fricking Oscar. The simplest answer is he snapped on Rock.
FWIW this could also lend more to the fact that it was staged than not IMO
Why would he tank his career over a lame joke?

I'm surprised (and a little disappointed) that the conspiracy theory on here hasn't morphed into "The Academy gave Will Smith the Best Actor award in exchange for doing this bit to help their ratings" yet.

He probably did find it funny though, it's fricking Steve-O.

He can't fake laugh but can convincingly fake assault but forgets he can't F bomb on live network TV.
He's a more complicated actor than I figured.

Staging an assault on the biggest award show of the year: Obvious
Faking a belly laugh of someone making a joke about you: IMPOSSIBLE!!!

Funny how I hear how much they hate each other though, from multiple posters.
I first heard it from a guy I was sitting next to in a bar about 5 minutes after it happened. It seems decently well known in Hollywood circles, and Will Smith will never put up with an insult to him or his family real or imagined since they look at themselves the way Ancient Egyptian Pharaohs viewed themselves. They’re just next level.

Look I get it, I see both sides of the argument. I'm just not sold on Smith losing his cool over that terrible 3rd grade joke, sorry. I know there are way more nuances than that, a history, etc.
I just dont see GI Jane being the thing that pushes Jada/Smith over the edge.
