That's what I'm wondering. If he said something like, "No wonder you don't have kids" or "It's a good thing you don't have kids" when she corrected him about his prescription mistake, then that's just rude, not a privacy violation.

Mil and friend said he was being a big a-hole after he realized he was wrong about mil script.

The two docs were probably shooting the shite, and one says, "Say, don't you treat X's MIL? I just saw X, and it turns out she is sterile. Very sad case." Or maybe a nurse mentioned it.

I bet the disclosing doc learned the info some casual way like that, rather than nosing through a file. He don't want to read that shite. That's what he does all day long.

Why he then mentioned it out in front of MIL is anyone's guess. The way it is described by the OP, it was like "I may have fricked up MIL's Rx, but at least I'm not sterile like you." I bet it was really a more innocent, "So sorry to hear you can't have children." But who knows?

But I still wonder what exactly was said.

My friend and her mil said that he was on his computer in the exam room . He was bitching about having to research info on mil prescription(dosage changes). Doc said I shouldn't be doing all this and just rude because he didnt think he was wrong about mil script. Doc said something along the lines of , you just saw Dr C and found out you can't have children, huh. He walked out after and nurse brought mil corrected script to the exam room. He didn't like the fact that he was wrong I guess

If That's how it actually went down I would definitely file a complaint.

Yeah that's a violation UNLESS she consented somewhere in the past that he can disclose info to the MIL (unlikely but since she goes into the exam room with the MIL she may have signed some documents we aren't aware of)

Even then, that comment has nothing to do with treatment of or payment for services rendered so... yeah he fricked up

He shouldn't of been looking at any of those records and definitely should not have told any unauthorized parties of knowledge gained

My friend and her mil said he was very blunt and rude about it. Doc didn't ask her anything. He said that to be spiteful because he was proven wrong. It shocked both of them and the doctor saw my friend upset about it and didn't care.

It's a breach of PHI and for fricks sake it's HIPAA, not HIPPA.

Your writing style is nauseating.

The manager can't believe it either because I heard the phone conversation. Manager kept insisting that my friend had to have asked mil doctor a medical question about herself . My friend said that she never signed any documents. Her mil is elderly that's why she goes to the doc with her. Mil doc and friends doc are in different towns so I doubt they discussed anything about my friend

So the doc defiled the DIL's Hippa rights. Then the MIL got a megaphone and made sure the whole world knew the DIL's private business.

I do not know the penalty for a Dr. violating Hippa rights. Censure? Civil? Criminal?

MIL needs to be told to STFU and given a pair of socks to shove in her mouth when she feels the need to spread other family member's business around. She can also never be told anything again, spoken to, or have her existence acknowledged in any way. She volunteered to be a pariah.

There is some personal relations you aren't sharing with the rest of the class.

It doesn't go this strange without having deep personal involvement.

She's fricking the doctors buddy or something.

Would the offended party receive the fine money? How is she made whole after being violated?

I usually sign paperwork when I go to the Dr that says they won't talk about my info without my consent. I also have to set a beginning and ending date for people who I permit to view my stuff.

Sounds like a textbook violation because her case was discussed, WITH HER NAME INCLUDED, with another doctor
