It may not be as simple as "It’s calories in vs. calories out." because all calories are not the same.

The calorie is a fixed measure of thermal energy content.

This kind of stuff is always confusing to me even though it shouldn’t be. I also don’t understand macro and micro with food.

I haven't eaten breakfast in 30 years outside of a vacation or holiday. And even on holidays I sleep until 11am, find my girlfriend's brother tossed out the bacon and eggs, so I have her make me some more, eat it in bed and figure it's actually lunch. I still have to hear him cry about that every Thanksgiving since.

Exactly you can’t change physics. There are plenty of studies of people doing the twinkee and candy diet to prove that if you’re in a calorie deficit by eating all junk or veggies they both lost the same amount of weight. One felt like shite, of course but it proved the point

Thermal effect of food is real. Your body works harder to break down protein vs carbs and fat. For most basic people to just get an understanding they just need to eat less than they consume.

It’s not that confusing, don’t listen to BS like what that guy said. Figure out how many calories your body needs through calculators and trial and error. Eat your protein target and fiber and stay within that number to maintain weight.

People way over complicate things.

Since I have retired, I have gotten used to two meals a day. Wife and I walk almost every morning and when we get back, we usually have brunch around 10. It can be breakfast or lunch whatever fits for the moment.

This country and life in general would be so much nicer if everyone would just shut the frick up and mind their own business.

I hardly ever eat breakfast and it’s been that way since adolescence. I love breakfast foods too, just have no need to eat in the first several hours of the day

Ideally, you need protein in the morning. You should eat something.

Not true. Timing is a myth. Hit your protein target throughout the day and try to spread it out. You don’t need shite when you wake up. It’s a personal preference. Fasted vs fueled workouts produced same results in numerous studies.

Go by what you like and prefer. I’ve done fasted workouts for 10 years and put on nice muscle mass.

What a fricking stupud idea

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.

you "break your fast" from sleeping ~8 hours

Your body needs fuel and hydration to get going.

I do start my day with weights and a 2-mile run, but I prefer to do it on an empty stomach. No way I'm going to McDonalds either before or after my workout.

I play full court hoops every Sunday morning and have for a decade. I’ve never eaten a thing before I play, just water.

Ok so it’s not breakfast that’s bad then?

Why are you saying it is?

Shouldn’t this just be a fat shaming thread? Why go after breakfast?

If you are sleeping in until lunch time like a hungover college kid, it would be impossible for you to eat breakfast.

All you guys are beating your chest about not eating breakfast are being silly. If not eating breakfast works for you, then that’s great. But that doesn’t mean it’s better for everyone.

Of course, if you go to a McDonald’s breakfast drive-through line, most people are going to be obese. They are at McDonald’s. And it’s not just McDonald’s, most breakfast servings are too large. However, most servings at all meals in America are too large.

The statement that you have a “calorie budget” is accurate. If you want to gain or lose weight, you need to eat more or less than a certain calorie target every day.

However, not all calories are created equally. Eating healthy calories is going to fuel your body and keep you satiated longer. That prevents you from eating more calories.

There are also a lot of advantages to eating at certain times. For instance, I generally feel hungry when I wake up. Eating in the morning, sets my glucose in line, and keeps me from getting overly hungry or having crashes throughout the day.

I eat a far smaller lunch than most working people. Usually between 400 and 600 cal.

I have found that taking my calories throughout the day to hit my end goal of 2500 to 2700 is perfect for me. I also lift four days a week and do 35 to 45 minutes of zone two cardio two days a week. Plus play tennis, golf and other activities.

So, does America “need breakfast?”
Maybe, maybe not. It depends on the person and it depends on the breakfast. Breakfast is not the issue. Calories is the issue and bad calories is an issue.

I do think that a lot of people would benefit from saving their calories throughout the day and rewarding themselves with a bigger dinner. Many people eat a huge breakfast and a huge lunch, and then end up with a huge dinner anyway. Letting yourself feel full at night after eating well all day is usually going to lead positive overall calorie intake.
