I was hoping for the best. The same way when LSU looks like crap on field and is down 14 in the late 3rd quarter and I hope they pull it out.

But obviously on that course at those speeds, one needs a fully functioning knee.

Part of me thinks she's awesome for trying. But that was really bad. Question... no one on her team got bumped so she could do this, correct?

Because the 8th best American skier has a better chance of medaling than a gutsy but vain former star with a bad injury.

ooked like she tried to turn sideways in the air to stop or something.

Watch it again, her pole clipped the gate and sort of pulled her backwards

I thought you needed ACL for acceleration-deceleration movements?

Gravity accelerates you. Your legs control four basic actions: Rotary movements (rotational movements from the hip), edging movements (articulating the ankles laterally), pressure control movements (vertical movements of the knee and hip) and balancing movements (a combination of movements).

Where the ALC helps is the pressure control movements. Those forces can be significant at downhill speeds, especially at the bottom of the turns. However the braces can transfer those forces to the quads whos contractions are really where the forces are managed.

And I'll add this. While 60+ miles an hour sounds fast, and having been that fast on skies, it is. But, the average recreational skier goes 30-40 mpg on an average blue run. Most true expert skies can manage that speed on black groomers. However, yhere is a difference between simply skiing fast down a slope and trying to maximize speed and efficiency through a course, That's what regular skiers can't do.

I can't even imagine what handling the forces hitting your knees turning on skis at 60 mph would feel like without one.

Going that fast isn't as difficult as you think. However, see my post above.

Yeah if you watch the replay, she was stable. Her pole caught the gate while in the air and turned her sideways.

Would have crashed no matter what

I don't know how to link images or Tweets, but actually it was her whole right arm that clipped the gate (assuming what I am seeing on X isn't fake of course).

Despite Lindsey Vonn's selfishness to compete at age 41, and with a torn ACL to boot, she didn't end up costing us the event. Breezy Johnson won gold.

Why do yall keep bringing up her age? She’s won multiple events this season. It’s not like she’s out there finishing last. She’s earned the spot.

Also there are likely a ton of sponsor $$ on the line that she has to start the race in order to be considered an Olympian and get bonuses. The same thing happened in women’s marathon with one of the US athletes. It’s their spot, they earned it, it’s theirs to give up.

I truly do not understand the hate this woman gets.

She earned it pre-ACL injury.

As someone that competed in an Olympic sport (not anywhere near close to that level obviously) I don’t care what anyone else tells me if I earned a spot and am told I can go I’m going. Call me selfish all you want that’s an opportunity you may never get again.

Here’s a pic of the moment it happened.

Good chance that happens even with two healthy ACLs. Her pole just clipped the gate.

I have never liked Lindsey Vonn and now I like her even less. I hope the is the last I have to hear about her trying to do something she should have retired from a long time ago.

If you want to argue she shouldn’t have raced on the torn ACL, sure (even though I disagree).

But she was 1st in the World in Downhill (what she was racing) in the 25-26 season coming into the games (having raced 5 out of 8 events for the season). 3rd in Super-G.

Can we take a second to appreciate the fact that in less than 10 minutes a guy on a snowy mountain in Italy took pictures, found pictures and uploaded pictures for immediate review by the entire world. that's crazy to me still.

But yeah it looks like she would have crashed regardless. Her two prior runs looked fine.

Yeah it can done pretty quick with FTP (direct connection from camera to client). Most high level sports photogs send them directly to editors that way. Or will have a setup on site to upload quickly.

Watching the replay now, and the guys on the broadcast that appear to know more about this sport than most posting here don't seem to believe the ACL had anything to do with this.

They've pointed out:

-she competed with a torn ACL without even knowing it back in the early 2010s
-many people have competed in this event with a torn ACL or no ACL at all
-She's known for just sending it--all gas, no brakes
-Healthy ACL or not, that crash was going to happen there
-a Healthy, 20 year old Vonn couldn't have avoided that crash

So it seems like all of this "she shouldn't have competed" nonsense is based more in vitriol for the person than a knowledge of the sport.

As someone already pointed out, she was 3rd best out of 5 Americans in the practice rounds. There's an argument if she was 5th and worse than alot of the competition.
