Yea, it is pretty lively. Pointless for deer. If OP is going to hunt something like Nilgi, Buffalo, grizzly, etc the extra horsepower is well warranted IMO.

Personally, I'd get a .338 or .375 and learn to shoot it. Basically anybody can shoot a .375 well if the rifle fits good and they actually want to shoot it.

Bergara B-14 Ridge in 6.5 PRC, .308 or .270.

My cousin shoots a B-14 in .308. I shot a few deer with it last year and it's awesome. He has a Leopold First Focal Plane scope on it, I think it's around 20x at max magnification. It made me feel like I was a pretty good shot.

hunting rifle, will be mostly deer hunting and some exotics here and there.

Tikka in 308, 270, 30-06, 7mm rem mag.

Don't get a cartridge like PRC or something where you can't find ammo or there is only one choice. The calibers I listed usually ammo is everywhere in many flavors.

Scope I'd look at Meopta.

Will be my primary hunting rifle, I am not a big hunter but am given the opportunity to go a couple of times a year. I take it because I like having the meat in the freezer.

Appears to be plenty of 6.5 PRC ammo available. Don’t put out false info.

I have a browning x bolt in order. In 7prc. There’s an ammo dealer at local gun shows that I placed an order with and I’m buying two hundred rounds. It’s pricy but from what I’m reading that round is getting popular especially with western hunters. That amount should do me for a long time.

7mm prc has only one choice so it's automatically out.

Besides, name one animal that will know the difference between the 270,308,3006
7mm rem mag and a 6.5prc. I'd get a common round and not think twice.

Every new caliber gets a rush of ammo availability soon followed by scarce options and then nothing. See the winchester short mags, ruger compact mags, etc etc

Relative to normal stuff, availability is total shite, 6.5 cripplemoor being the only exception that I'm aware of.

.300 Win Mag is a great option. Mine is very light, but recoil is no issue with the muzzle brake. Recoil is less noticable than my .30-06. Can't help the loud, but earplugs are cheap.

You can get relatively cheap Norma Whitetail 150 gr ammo for it that shoots very well and will work for any deer sized animal. You can get Federal Terminal Velocity 200 gr. copper ammo for hunting any large game/exotics

Tikka t3 is the right rifle choice without a doubt. Guaranteed accurate and reliable and well within your budget.

Caliber, eh. Whatever tickles your pickle. I'm a .300 win mag fan for a do-anything north American rifle.

.30-06 isn't always the best answer, but it's never a wrong answer. Preferable to the win mag if you have any recoil concerns. Can handle anything on this continent, a little on the light side for grizzly if that's ever potentially in your future.

Exactly. I had a 270wsm. I started handloading for it years ago. I just sold it because I can't find brass. I'll never go back to anything other than common rounds.

I just turned my 270win into a full custom rifle for my kids. Got a Leupold VX-5HD 3-15x44mm on top. Bought 100 Norma cases and I'm ready to go. Got 110gr TTSX and it should do great on whitetail.

I bought an 8mm rem mag and it's at the gunsmith for a full custom 7mm rem mag. He wanted me to go with 7mm PRC. I was like nope. Can't find brass unless it's Hornady junk and years later if my kids decided they won't load for it, I don't want them not being able to find ammo.

My 7mm rem mag will do everything the PRC can do because it's an 8 twist Bartlein. I have 300 cases of Peterson brass, 139gr LRX, 168gr LRX and 200 Nosler 175 Accubond LR bullets to try with 10lbs of various powder.

Got a Swarovski x5i to put on top of it.

Needless to say I have quite a bit tied into these 2 rifles.

Next will be an AR15. Not getting 300 blackout, 6.5 Grendel or anything like that. Just 223 /5.56 to play with.

It's pretty hard to justify straying from the list below for a hunting rifle

Small game
.22 lr

Deer
.223
.243
.270
.308
.30-06
6.5 cm

North America (western, big stuff, etc)
7mm rem mag
300 win mag

Alask/Africa
375 h&h

Also,
*35 whelen (if your state allows this for primitive)

That list spans all game on the planet, the full spectrum of recoil and range, will always have ammo available, and will always be offered in the vast majority of rifle makes and models.

Yes, there are "better" cartridges in every horsepower bracket there is, but they all lack some characteristics of availability in rifle or ammo choice, often both.

If you want to spend 1k

Savage Axis in 30-06 or .270...around 450
Leupold VX Freedom, 4x12x40mm....350
Good rings....80 bucks
Sling of choice. 40.00

that is 930 plus tax, so like 1030 out the door.

The Tikka is 700, so while a better rifle for most, if you are trying to stay at a grand there is just no way if that is your rifle.

I have a Browning X-bolt Micro Midas that I got for my wife and kids in 7mm08. It's on of my favorite rifles.
I also have a Weatherby Vanguard in .257 wby that I love too.

90% of the people asking about what cartridge to get would never be undergunned with a .308 and most will not or have no business shooting past 250yd. It’s almost like they are trying to decide whether they need a Ferrari or a lambo to go to the grocery store and they still haven’t learned how to drive.
Some of the best hunters/killers I know use 308/7mm08/30-06/30-30 but they are hunters not tactical gear head junkies worrying about 200fps.

I’m currently handloading for the archaic .270 win with a standard twist barrel, but the 7PRC is here to stay. It’s a slightly faster and more efficiently burning 7 rem mag with match grade tolerances saami spec’d into the chamber and no pointless belt, in an oal that can shoot the long fancy boolits everyone thinks they like from standard length mags and a suppressor-ready length barrel without burning that barrel out like a 28 nosler. Most cartridges fail because they claim to do one or two things way better, this one made a bunch of small, practical, modern improvements to something already damn near perfect.

For the majority of shooters it’s a moot point as they will never shoot past the OBs favorite number 350
Below is from Ron spomer outdoors
As for the 7 Rem Mag vs. the 7 PRC, the trajectory data indicates there is no appreciable difference out to 400 yards and not a heck of a lot more at 500 yards, so most hunters won’t realize a major advantage with the PRC version. However, if you’re hoping to win a target shooting contest at 600 yards, the 3 inches less wind deflection and 4 inches less drop from the PRC give you a leg up. By 1,000 yards the PRC has nearly a 2-foot drop advantage and 14-inch windage advantage. Clear winner.

Never disagreed with any of that, but that’s the point. It does everything the 7rm does slightly better while eliminating the few things that were a pain in the arse about the 7rm, and that’s going to be enough to keep ammo on the shelf.
